I was wondering if any of you guys have done a side by side comparison of an iPod hooked up to an amp vs a CDP hooked up to the same amp using the same headphones. I did a quick comparison on one song and I wanted to hear your guys' opinions.
I listened to one song: Andrea Bocelli - Romanza - Con Te Partido
3g 15gig iPod/Marantz CD-63SE CDP > MG-head OTL (raytheon 5751 triple mica) > HD-600's
First off I was very impress with the quality the iPod reproduced. I recorded the song in 256 ACC format. Please note that the interconnect from iPod to amp is a very cheap one while the Marantz is hooked up with 200 dollar interconnects.
The iPod did a nice job with the mids and vocals. Sounded very clear and the soundstage was about the same as the Marantz. The bass on the otherhand was not as good as the Marantz. The mid bass with the marantz really pulled you into the music and made you feel like you were in the middle of it while the iPod had some trouble. The high's were also not as good with the iPod although not bad. I noticed that the violins in the background seemed very thin and had trouble getting up there. It just made the violins stand out way too much.
Overall I am very impress with the small iPod. Although it definitely doesnt sound as good as the cdp, the sound is definitely acceptable if you dont pay attention too closely. I guess you just can't compare these two things. But the iPod is definitely better than I thought it would be with all the horrible reviews.
Until then... I would like to hear your review or opinions. I am just a noob at head-fi but I'd thought I'd do a noob review. Heh... everyone has to start somewhere.
