From what ive gathered the original 5g came in 30/60

than the 5.5g came out with a brighter screen and was available in 30/80.

So is it pretty safe to assume that any 5th generation 80GB will have to be the 5.5g with brighter screen and support for 240GB HDD mod?

then with RWA Imod 5.5g would it really help a lot to get a seperate dac and then feed that to the pico slim as i hear there is a pretty good wolfson dac in the ipod 5.5g?

I have a 5 and a 5.5, both came with 60G hard drives.
The 5.5 has the brighter screen and I put the 240G drive in it a few years ago.
The 5 I bought with a dead hard drive for spare parts. I ended up putting the 60G drive that came out of my 5.5 in it and it works fine. The 5 does have a very noticeably dimmer display and seems to have less contrast.
Other than the display brightness I could not tell the two apart.

but when they upped the capacity to 80GB only the 5.5g was out. So the 80GB edition has to be 5.5g right?

I believe that is true.
The 80G was not out yet when I bought my 60G. It came out a couple of months after I bought the 60G.
This Wikipedia page lays out all of the different models and generations.

80GB is definitely the iPod 5.5g or newer.
