So I went to my school audiologist today and they had some undergraduates at work. Which means, they'll take their time and do very carefull testing =D I went for a hearing test to check out my hearing. The result was pretty positive. I'm at 5 db at 250hz -8khz and 0db at 2khz, for some reason i can hear 2khz real well. Well, since I was there, I asked them to check the UE5c SPL (Sound Pressure Level). For some of you do not know why SPL is so important, it's basically a number given to the amount of pressure apply to the ears. Anything below 85 SPL is good listening level. If you listen to music for more than 3 hours continuously, you want to listen below 85 SPL. Well how the heck do you know what level you're listening to? Basically they have this machinne w/ a small tube, they put that in my ears along w/ my UE5cs, then I would turn up the volume.

For the iPod with the UE5c an average of 85 SPL is @ half the volume bar. If you plan to listen to music for a long time, make sure you do not pass the half way mark on the volume level! Hope that helps you UE5c users out there. It's different for all phones, so if you're concern about volume, go to your audiologist and check it out.

wow thanks for this valuable information.

I am using UM2, which has Sensitivity: 119 dB/mW and Impedance: 27 ohms, and I listen at 3 / 10 of the volume, so I guess I am fine.

Hi Rx!

Thanks so much for this information. Ever since Gorman has his UE10Pros checked out with his Rio I've been anxious to learn how the UE5c/Ipod combo would test out! Last thing I need is premature hearing loss!

I too tend to listen just shy of the 50% mark on my 60 gig Ipod and also my Mini, occasionally at 50% but never higher (unless it's some wierd ancient classical recording that is clearly at a low volume level). That said, my main beef with the Shuffle is that there is no way to know what your volume level is, except of course by listening to it. Since I run with the Shuffle in a noisy city environment I sometimes worry that I'm experiencing a kind of "volume creep" -- but of course there's no way to tell!

Really, your post is very helpful and reassuring! Thank you so much!

Ruh Roh. I'm listening at too loud of volumes to start with, and have a horrible habit of creeping up the volume. Thanks for the info.

If you listen to music at high volume, you must give your ears some rest. If you listen at 95 SPL, you should stop after 2 hrs of listening (I know it's rated at 4hrs over at headwize, but 95 is way too loud for 4 hrs). Just wanted you guys to have a good and safe listening experience.

I am guessing the same is true of the ipod and the 10s. I generally at work listen to 1/3 volume. But at the gym and the noise, I listen to music just above 1/2 way.
