Better dont touch the EQ on an iPod... just makes things worse (e.g. adds clipping)
Use different headphones to alter the sound-signature but let the EQ turned off
Well, you could also try to lower the gain of your music files. Check out mp3Gain or aacGain and lower the gain to around 85%... then the EQ becomes usefull

Jep, I noticed that when I got my SE530 PTH, that really sounds horrible if you increase the bass... I used to do that before with my K324P and it was allright, but with the SE530 you really can't do that, but they have enough bass anyway...^^
