I was reading a recent issue of the New York Post. There was an article about the new iPods. The writer stated that there was a rumor that Apple is working on a version that mixes MP3s together like a DJ. Does anyone know of this rumor, and whether there's any truth? Thanks.

Well, if it's the Post I doubt it.

Related article, but haven't heard any future mixing capabilities.

i read that and i really hope it's not true. because damn, that is one of the lamest concepts i can think of. either use the playlists like a normal person cueing up music, or get some turntables and spin in the proper fashion you know?

Are you sure that they meant mixing or just crossfading? If it was crossfading then I could...maybe... see a use for it.

adding cross fading to the OTG playlists would be very handy, which as far as i'm aware, seem to be truly on the go with the new firmware.

i have a few friends who dj at alternative nights, where mixing between the songs is less important, just a bit of cross fading.

whne i've seen how much they have to lug about to do it, it's crazy.

imagine replacing it wth one ipod!!

Just so there's no confusion ... the writer wasn't suggesting that the iPod replace turntables so that DJs can mix. He seemed to be suggesting that someone was working on (maybe) a software update that would allow your playlist to be either crossfaded and/or beat-matched between tracks, rather than the annoying "break" between MP3s. You thus could program your iPod to give you a true continuous "mix" of listening. Has anyone heard a rumor of Apple working on something like this? If so, do you think it would it be a software update, or something that they would have to release in a new-gen iPod?

This feature is 100% needed on the IPOD.

A lot of people who listen to dance music do not think in terms of "tracks" - we listen to continous mixes. So the idea of acquiring music that is mixed and chopping it up is a no-go, if you can't put it back together seamlessly.

That problem with the IPOD (and other MP3/AAC players) where you can't listen to continous sound without a break - is a MUST-FIX. Its really lame.

That alone has held me back from getting a hard-drive based player - I use Minidisc instead. I'm sure a lot of other people have this same concern.

However Apple has to fix not only add cross-fade capabily, but it also has to make it such that you can take take a mix CD and play the mixed songs continuously through the track marks without having to record it in MP3 or AAC as one "song" . Making it one "song" without track marks means you can't navigate properly.

Skagen makes perfect sense. My #1 MP3 turnoff is Artifacts followed by breaks in the songs. Listening to Dark Side of the Moon with my Old MP3 CD player was nothing but ugly.

Isnt it the mp3 format rather then the player that cause the break between the songs ?

I could care less if its the fault of the MP3 format, the AAC format orthe IPOD. They're making an audio devide, its 2003 - they should be able to make a player that can actually execute silent and seamless track marking - especially for the kind of prices they charge.

Hey, maybe they'll enable you to use the scroll circle for simulated scratching!! Scratching is SO amusing, and that would be pretty cool on an ipod... though of course pretty useless...
