hi, i recently bought a new 15gb iPod and a Supermini v6, now i need ta complete the setup with some better 'phones.

I've got the standard cheapos: mx-400, mx-500, ksc-35, as well as some better 'phones: V-6, 888 (not worth the money

) these have served me well, but i'm lookin ta upgrade to something better.

Proly something around 200$ and not etymotics. I know the etys would be perfect for this setup, but the microphonics issue is just too big of a problem (tho there are DIY mods that can help, they are too much of a compromise to be a viable solution). This will be for portable and desk use, and sound leakage is also an important factor.

i really like my V6's in terms of detail and clarity (i dont find it at all harsh, as some people feel these phones are), but i really dislike how poor the v6 is in that everything sounds like its originating from the middle of my head, a reason why a got an amp with xfeed. Is there a portable phone which has a greater soundstage, but also does not leak alot of sound?

So, is there anyone out there found an ideal headphone for the ipod>supermini setup? thanx

i think you're kind of stuck with etys if you want true portability. my opinion anyways...

I use the e2 with supermini, but i've begun to notice the hissing, which occurs only with low impedance headphones. I suggest the ety er-4s. Very good headphones, and they won't hiss I promise

GOOD LUCK!

heh, anyhow, yeh a pair of ety er4s would be perfect sans microphonics...i might just have ta learn ta get use to it...

I would take the leap even though they are pretty expenisive imo. I have them and all I do to decrease the annoyance of the microphonics is use the shirt clip. You can even wrap the cord around your ear (I don't remember who I read this from)

I think you'll get used to them either way

get the er4p/s. i would say 4p just in case you decide to go w/o an amp sometimes; also, Xin has just made a very tiny adapter to turn p->s, www.fixup.net.

since you are in college, you will NEVER regret getting these expensive headphones. i got 4p's a year ago and they are extremely useful for studying, flights to and from home, and making long walking trips to appointments. Also, one of the best things about them is that they don't look expensive, so nobody is tempted to jump you .

as for microphonics: i use a portable player in my pocket and just run the cord up my shirt (using the clip, too). i don't hear any microphonics that way..i guess maybe if i jogged with them, but who runs with ety's in?

I would definitely forget about ER4P/S and go with Shure E5 which sound much better (bigger soundstage, deeper/tighter bass, richier mid/high, no microphonic, won't go deep in your as ety but excellent isolation, sturdy as hell, etc). I may sell mine at reasonable price if you are interested (that is if $750 prophonic 2x-s I am getting is equally good as e5 in sound quality).

a note on the e5's, should you decide to go that route...
if you're planning on using your amp to give your volume a kick in the pants, i can tell you right now, it would NOT be necessary. 50-60% volume on the ipod alone can be loud enough to be bordering on pain.
also, from what i've read here in a review or comparison, the benefits of using the amp with these cans is pretty marginal, if there's any benefit at all...you may want to do a search if you're seriously considering them.

happy hunting!
