Just tried to use ipod updater and now I'm stuck. After the update the ipod prompt me to connect to external power. I connect it to usb 2.0 port, but there's no power since the computer doesn't recognize ipod. I figured I need to reset the ipod first before it can be recognized , but in order to reset it, it needs to be plugged in to power first. It seems to be a dead-loop here. Wonder if there's anyway out of this other than buying a power adapter? I don't have a firewire port so power adapter seems to be the only solution, unless I can somehow power up the usb port without windows recognizing ipod. Any suggestions?

Don't panic

...You should be able to put your beloved 'lil devil in Disk Mode or follow the instructions here to reset it. FYI, it would also help to know which Model you have and which Generation.

Good luck...

It's apple 4G clickwheel. I followed the instructions, then instead of the power adpater picture, I get a picture of half charged battery, but it's not charging, nor is it recognized by the computer. I guess I'll have to go buy a power adapter then. It's kind of weird that this whole update thing wouldn't work on a usb cable connected ipod...

Did you...
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Put it in Disk Mode:
Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.

Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
