Most likely your headphone jack is faulty. Try pressing the connector or pushing it in some direction, I bet this will pause your song. iPod decides to pause if the connection is bad.

Mine does the same thing and this is what I've narrowed it down to. If I wiggle my headphone plug a certain way it will pause, so I push play and go on my way...for a little while. I plugged my dad's super-fi 3's into it and it snapped right in, so maybe I'll just replace the plug on my KSC-75's and hope that does the trick.

Well, now you know the most likely culprit (headphone jack or headphone plug). If it's the plug, that's easy to fix, if its the jack, not so easy.

Take some plastic wrap and make a little washer with a hole just big enough for your headphone's plug, and use it to keep the base of the plug and the ipod from touching. What happens is the metal on the plug (besides the actual signal part) shorts the ipod's input jack's ground to the case, which makes the ipod think you've unplugged the headphones. It has more to do with conflicting designs than individual faulty headphones, and doesn't do it with all headphone models.

My ipod mini "autopaused" often when I listened with Koss KSC-75's. I tried the plastic wrap trick, but it didn't work for me. Now, I listen to my ipod through a Xin SM3 connected with a Turbodock II. Using the line out of the ipod bypasses the problem for me. And when I work out, I plug Shure e3c's directly into my ipod mini and the autopause is not a problem.
