iPod Photo - Distorted Bass?

Got a new iPod Photo 60gigs, but hearing distortion in some deep bass that wasn't there on the 3rd gen iPod (15gigs).

It's not on every song, but it's not random (i.e., consistently there on the same type of bass across songs, also distortion is always there when playing the same song).

On both the Photo and 3rd gen, running Apple Lossless. Can hear it through the headphone jack and lineout for the Photo. Probably only about 40 hours or so on it.

Headphones are Sensaphonics ProPhonic Soft 2X. When using lineout, going Sik lineout -> Earcandy Right Angle Mini to Mini -> Emmeline SR-71 portable headphone amp -> Sensaphonics.

Anyone with similar problems or is it just a dud?

Do you have an Apple store nearby? Maybe you could try out the demo models there.

Yeah I think maybe if you replace the Earcandy cable with a mini-mini from
RadioShack your Bass will come back.

Check to see if you've accidentally left the qualizer on for some weird reason. I don't have an iPod Photo, but iPod Photo & 4G (clickwheel) iPod are supposed to have the same sound output qualities... I have not experienced any low-end distortion on my iPod.

If the equalizer wasn't set to anything, and you're still getting distortion, it's time to take it back for an exchange.

Obviously I've been spending too much money and not thinking enough - the equalizer was exactly the problem. When I first got it, I played around with the "bass boost" (not that the Sensa's are lacking, but I miss the over-the-top bass of the Shure e5's) and forgot I left it on. Turned it off and all is good again. (Though I miss the bass again. Guess you can't have everything.)
