Hi!
Please help an iPod noob. I've been reading many threads here and other forums and found this:

“On a side note, ALAC is a proprietary format made by Apple, much like Microsoft's WMA (Windows Media Audio). dbpoweramp was able to reverse engineer the ALAC encoder to get full use out of it. Apple is not providing any source codes or any other method of encoding to ALAC other than iTunes.”

The dBpoweramp Music Converter 12.2 not free! Though I tried to download free trial to check it out and it didn’t work!

So what’s software you guys using to rip CD's into lossless format (ALAC)?

Thank you for you time and help!

Wrong forum but the answer is simple: iTunes is tailor-made for the task and it's free. In iTunes go into Preferences/Advanced/Importing and select Apple Lossless. Be sure also to check the Use Error Correction option.

I just went through this exercise. dbPoweramp's converter does work... to a degree. You can convert or rip to ALAC and it'll play fine on your computer but copy it to your iPod and that's where the problem lies. It'll play individual tracks fine but it will skip tracks. It's a known problem at dbPoweramp and they have yet to resolve it. Too bad. I was ready to use their software to convert a number of my FLAC files to ALAC so I could copy them to my near future 5.5 gen iMod. Then I was going to use Xplay2 for the communicating to my iMod.

Had to ditch that idea and load iTunes.

Those are your 2 choices.

You could go the Rockbox route. I gave up on it after over a year of patiently waiting for them to address the CPU usage issue which sucks battery juice at an accelerated rate. I'll go back to Rockbox when that is resolved. Till then - it'll have to be iTunes and ALAC.

In case you already have ripped files - as I do - that are in a lossless format, you don't have to re-rip. If they aren't WMA lossless, convert them. Then you can use iTunes to convert to ALAC. But if you are starting from scratch - follow cooperpwc's advice.

I think I experience the same problem, sometimes my iMod would play the first 5 seconds of a track and then skip to the next track, or have a minor skip inside the track itself.

I was not aware that this could be caused by dbpoweramp, but it doesn't happen often, so I've gotten used to it.
Certainly easier than reripping everything again through itunes.

It doesn't really happen often, sometimes only once a day. (with ~4-6 hrs of listening)
I can live with that.
