hey there, guys.
i use my ER-4P out of the MZ-R50. sound sucks, damn it. i can really hear the signature of MD. so digital i want to puke sometimes. sometimes it's ok.
i'm looking for a HD mp3 player. i would like to ask only those who has experience with the 4 series, the MZ-R50 and one of these mp3 player, to compare the sound. an amp won't be used here.

thank you!

R50 is a nice unit but I do think it's better served as a lineout source to an external amp. I much prefer the old Sharp MDRs with ER4p. They have very warm sound which cuts down on the "digitalness" of MD recording. I never heard 323 but heard it's excellent and based on my experience with other Sharp units I certainly would believe so. Unfortunately, the new Sharp MDP/R's are the only players that support Dolby headphones so I usually just listen to my DS8. Never heard Zen/NJB but iPod was OK with ER4P although I still think the old Sharp MD units are a lot better but personally I'm not the biggest fan of the iPod sound so take that into consideration.

The strength of the MZ-R50 has always been its line-out jack, not its headphone jack. You'll get much better sound from an amp hooked up to its line-out jack.

As for the iPod, you'll get as good sound out of it as you put into it. If you put low-bitrate MP3s on it, you won't be any happier. However, if you put high-bitrate MP3s, or WAV/AIFF files, on it, it will sound better than the MZ-R50, especially without an amp.
