Ive read that the shuffle and nano ipods skip a lot when playing high bitrate VBR mp3s. Whats this all about??? I was about to get an ipod and now this??? Does it also affect the full size ipods?
This is a major defect to me cause all my rips are lame preset extreme mp3s

One poster over at Hydrogen said it's the Photos too (and he said it like it was common knowledge). No problem here with -apx/-api LAME files on first gen, fourth gen or photo. Some reports of issues with Nero AAC files on shuffle, but I haven't heard much about anything else.

The skipping MP3s rumor is just BS.

Some AAC, not MP3, files encoded by third-party tools do cause the Shuffle (not the others) to skip. There's information about it over at Apple's support site.

its not bs, it happens when I have my shuffle hooked up to these little speakers in my car(FM radio doesn't work so I can't use itrip+ipod photo). But it only happens when I have it at 95-100% volume, it will cut out too much to listen too so I just turn down the volume, it's not just VBR, it happens on 192aac and other bitrate/aac or mp3 combinations. I never noticed it before with the headphones because I never had it over 95% volume until I hooked it up to some non amplified speakers.

That's not skipping. That's clipping. The Shuffle can deliver more current than the regular iPods, but expecting it to drive non-amplified speakers is wrong. You'd get the same thing if you hooked up any other DAP.

What you're describing is clipping. This thread is about skipping.

Anyway, my nano skipped a song the other day. Hasn't happened since though. My files are Nero AAC 192kbps and LAME APS. Don't remember it happening with my other iPods though.

That's definately clipping. Mine does the exact same thing with unamplified speakers, they just don't have the power for it. I also own a 60GB photo and it can power the speakers fine. The Shuffle can't power speakers.
