I have the 10G iPod with the scroll wheel and I love it except for those stupid earbuds which im not actually using. I am thinking of buying the ER-4P/S and I want to get an amp, probably the portable JMT META42. My question is wheather it would make a sound difference in terms of having an amp on the iPod. My iPod does not have a line-out so im afraid that the music would go though 2 amps, the on-board apple one and then the META42. I heard that the iPod has a digital volume thing so its much closer to a true line out than other headphones but I just cant find solid information on this. I know Jazz says that it will not improve the sound quality but I read reviews that it does so you can see my dilema. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

An amp with the iPod will improve the sound quality. However, part of the beauty of the iPod is its size and portability. Despite the fact that I have a very good META42 portable amp, I never use it with the iPod. If I were you, I'd go for the ER-4P/iPod combo, unless you're absolutely determined to get every last bit of sound quality, and are willing to put up with more bulk to get it.

Exactly. I don't really like taking 20 CDs, a PCDP, an amp, a mini cable, my headphones, etc. with me portably. An MP3 player + small phones is the ideal. Ipod + Ety ER4P is my dream uber-portable setup although I would settle for Ipod + KSC-35's

My current MP3 player is uber-crap.

So yes it would help, but do you really want to have to carry one around?

So you guys dont think the sound quality would justify carrying around the amp. I Might get an amp so when im in bed or sitting down somehwere in my house I can use it. Which amp would you recomment for this purpose. Thanks for the advice, you guys have changed some of my plans.

For me, no, the extra sound quality doesn't justify the loss of portability. For you? Your call, man. A portable META42 works fine for me. I use it with my SL-CT570 for bed and around the house listening.
