O.K., would ordering one of these high end cables for my 30 gig. iPod, HD-600, and Airhead be total insanity? I'm also thinking about re-ripping all of my music to a higher ACC sampling than Apple's default.

I know some of the forum members think a cable is a cable is a cable. But, for those that think cables can make a difference is this a big fat waste of money?

I don't think the cable is your weakest link in an iPod (AAC) + Airhead setup.

Before you start even thinking about cables like that, you should get a better amp.

or at least get a wallwart. when your cable is worth more than your amp though, that might be indicative of some kind of bottleneck.

Quality amp. first then the tweaks. I gotcha.

A portable META42 is a nice amp -the AD8620 is a great op amp. I can get about 8-9 hours with one rechargeable 9v.

I would definitely recommend encoding in MP3 with LAME - it takes a long time to encode, but if you use alt-preset-extreme you can get some excellent quality.
LAME is much closer to CD quality than the stock iTunes MP3 or even AAC encoder.

Yes, the HD-600 and Equinox even with a META42 is overkill with the iPod, but it will sound nice.

Good luck.

I second the --alt-preset extreme or --alt-preset fast extreme, instead of higher AAC encoding for best second. AAC may be better calculated in the future, but above 192kps at this point seems to still be mp3 territory. 128-192ish is great though for AAC.
