Hello all,

I'm planning on buying/making a cmoy to hook up to my ipod to power either AKG's K-701, Sennheiser's HD-650, or maybe even Grado's SR-225.

I would mostly be listening to rock, lots of Zeppelin, Stones, Beatles, Phish, Grateful Dead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rush, etc. I play bass guitar in a band so hearing the best, most realistic, detailed bass is imperative; seeing as I often learn songs by ear. Hearing great bass would definitely make that a lot easier and me a lot happier. Also, I have read stories about people hearing -previously undiscovered to them- minute details on their favorite records; that would be really neat if I could experience that, so detail would be nice.

The cans would need to be comfortable enough for a few (3 or 4, maybe even 5 at times) hours use. I have read that the Grado's sound is good for rock music, but it seems like they aren't too comfortable. Apparently the Sennheiser's signature sound is more laid back and sounds like you're away from the music more, I'd prefer to be right in the middle of it; so that's a turn off. I've read that after quite a substantial break-in period the AKGs are pretty great, and I'm fine waiting to let them break-in. So I'm leaning towards the AKGs at this point.

Price really isn't too much of an issue, I plan on making an investment to last me for a few years. I have a little over $350 to spend. I've shopped around and found that the best deal for the Grados with a 1/4 -> 1/8 adapter including shipping is around $205 US. The AKGs are going for around $275 and the lowest I can find the Sennheisers is $315. I plan on spending around $50 on the cmoy if I decide to buy rather than make. Hopefully I can save up and get a better amp down the road.

So basically,
Would this set up (ipod+cmoy) work well?
Which headphones would you suggest?
And also, for connecting the ipod to the cmoy-- the short 1/8 -> 1/8 cable, does quality matter much here? Would I be okay just picking up a cheapish cable from a local store?
Or should I go through the trouble of placing a separate order for a $15 quality connecting cable from the internet? Would the sound quality suffer from the local store cable?

Thank you very much,

-Eric

If you get a Cmoy, I'd suggest to equip it with the LM4562 Opamp in order to achieve best possible resolution and soundscape. Mine is able to drive my DT880 monsters, but only to an acceptable level. A K701 is rather more difficult to drive, so if you head towards that direction, you should head towards something "better" (others will work that out).

A Grado and a Cmoy on the other hand are a lovely combination. I tested mine with HF1 and MS2 versus some 400$ portable amp monster (forgot the brand) and didn't find any flaws with the Cmoy in comparison. Obviously being a rockhead and looking for bass slam, I would'nt recommend you the "cultivated triple" HD650/DT880/K701 anyway.

The cable in usage doesn't play any role for the sound IMO, but that statement will be perhaps doubted at this site.

I would say that the K701 doesn't sound good out of a cmoy. Never tried the HD650, but, from what i've read, it may not sound as good as with a more capable to drive high impedances amp also.
Regarding this, i'd say go for the Grado SR-225. Easily driven by a cmoy. Besides it sounds very good ...

My cmoy will not drive my k701 very well at all. I use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-A700 when I want to use the cmoy. When I am using a portable set-up I like the A700 closed back design also. You will have a clearer more distinct bass with the K701 though.

The SR225 would have some fun with that CMOY, but other than that, you really are wasting money purchasing the HD650 or K701.

Testify.

If you don't mind dropping the coin for these, the ATH-ESW 9/10 is a woody that has a pretty highly rated sound for portable use.

So wait, do you want me to back up what I said, or are you backing up what I said?
