Hi
Being one of the first to snatch up a 160gb iPod I thought I'd do some comparisons for you guys. I took some pictures hope you enjoy.
The two iPods being compared are:
Black: iPod Video 80gb (generation 5.5)
Silver: iPod Classic 160gb (generation 6)
At release the iPod Video retailed at $349 - likewise with the iPod Classic. They are both the same in dimensions.
The main visual difference lies in the new anodized aluminum finish with the Classics, where as the Video had a polycarbonate finish.
In terms of SQ, I am not a professional, but having used both iPods out of the headphone jack and the lineout dock, here are my impressions:
Out of the headphone jack I found the iPod classic to be quite weak. By this I mean, on the Video with my E2Cs, I'd never need to surpass 50% volume, however the Classics are quite quiet, and I needed to volume up to around 95% to actually 'feel' something.
However, using the line out and amping the sound, I found that the Classis is much better just in general.
In terms of usability, I have a large music collection (+/- 105gb) so I tested the iPods both with as much music as I could fit - so the 80gb was full to the brim, and the 160gb was not since I do not have that much.
I found the Classic to be extremely slow and quite unresponsive. I don't know if its a result of the larger music library or the new fancy UI, but something definitly lags it. For example: when trying to return to the main menu there is about a 2 second pause as the menu loads up the floating cover art for the right pane.
Some other UI Menu changes involve splitting up the Clocks and Alarm functionality. Now you can set more than 1 alarm, and this is great especially for people like me who wake up the same time on weekdays and a diff time on weekends.
This is a bit of a pain in the butt. The Video is much more smoother to navigate between menus and is much more efficient.
At this point in time, whilst I prefer the Classic due to the larger capacity, I have a small wishlist for Apple:
1. Option to switch between new and classic menus
2. Sort CoverFlow by Album Name
3. Option to have backlight always on when docked
4. Better On The Go playlist management
Other than that, I don't know what more to say, but will be happy to answer questions.

I know it would have been better to compare (looks wise) a black classic, but yea! Still!

I know this isn't as uber detailed with hardcore information as most reviews may be, but I just thought would be nice to a) start a comparison thread for people who have owned both, b) so people interested in buying a classic can get some information etc
. Also, big thx to my mate Ray for taking the pictures and letting me use his iPod (the video one)
