Hi

Being one of the first to snatch up a 160gb iPod I thought I'd do some comparisons for you guys. I took some pictures hope you enjoy.

The two iPods being compared are:

Black: iPod Video 80gb (generation 5.5)
Silver: iPod Classic 160gb (generation 6)

At release the iPod Video retailed at $349 - likewise with the iPod Classic. They are both the same in dimensions.

The main visual difference lies in the new anodized aluminum finish with the Classics, where as the Video had a polycarbonate finish.

In terms of SQ, I am not a professional, but having used both iPods out of the headphone jack and the lineout dock, here are my impressions:

Out of the headphone jack I found the iPod classic to be quite weak. By this I mean, on the Video with my E2Cs, I'd never need to surpass 50% volume, however the Classics are quite quiet, and I needed to volume up to around 95% to actually 'feel' something.

However, using the line out and amping the sound, I found that the Classis is much better just in general.

In terms of usability, I have a large music collection (+/- 105gb) so I tested the iPods both with as much music as I could fit - so the 80gb was full to the brim, and the 160gb was not since I do not have that much.

I found the Classic to be extremely slow and quite unresponsive. I don't know if its a result of the larger music library or the new fancy UI, but something definitly lags it. For example: when trying to return to the main menu there is about a 2 second pause as the menu loads up the floating cover art for the right pane.

Some other UI Menu changes involve splitting up the Clocks and Alarm functionality. Now you can set more than 1 alarm, and this is great especially for people like me who wake up the same time on weekdays and a diff time on weekends.

This is a bit of a pain in the butt. The Video is much more smoother to navigate between menus and is much more efficient.

At this point in time, whilst I prefer the Classic due to the larger capacity, I have a small wishlist for Apple:
1. Option to switch between new and classic menus
2. Sort CoverFlow by Album Name
3. Option to have backlight always on when docked
4. Better On The Go playlist management

Other than that, I don't know what more to say, but will be happy to answer questions.

I know it would have been better to compare (looks wise) a black classic, but yea! Still!

---

I know this isn't as uber detailed with hardcore information as most reviews may be, but I just thought would be nice to a) start a comparison thread for people who have owned both, b) so people interested in buying a classic can get some information etc

. Also, big thx to my mate Ray for taking the pictures and letting me use his iPod (the video one)

Unfortunately yep, that's the one area where they dropped the ball, IMO. Thanks a ton for the comparison as this is the player I'm thinking of upgrading to, the pics are great as well. It's too bad that the nano and classic seem to suffer with the implementation of the new UI, you would think Apple would've figured out a way to make it run more smoothly.

You can blame the sluginess on the 80Mhz Portal Player (nVidia) processor these and the 5+ gen iPods use. With Coverflow and everything else, they just cant cut it anymore.

How's the click wheel? I've heard it's not as sensitive as previous iPods, which can be an annoyance.

the clickwheel is not as sensitive as the 5.5g, it is a bit annoying but the menus - when scrolling thru songs - are quicker between each letter

Is it possible to change the classic's front face plate to 5.5g's ?
Not really like new design since it reminds me of older generation

Mine sure didn't come with any slip case. The cases are known to scratch your unit due to the tightness if you ever have any rough dirt particles on your ipod when you insert it.

I mean, it's not like you're getting less for the same amount of money. Yes, you're not getting the slip cover. a) very few people used it, b) it harmed iPods like someone mentioned below, it happened to mine in fact, and c) you're getting at least twice the space and almost twice the battery life for the same price as the ipod available 2 weeks ago.
