I am so thankful for this firmware... I bought a ipod classic 240 gb and converting my flac into apple lossless would have been a big pain in my bUm..

A 240GB ipod?! Where? Am I missing something? I don't keep up with ALL of the keynotes, but something this major I would know about it. At least if it were from Apple. Third party maybe? Might have to do some research.

 
I have to agree on the Rockbox being awesome. I can't believe I didn't know about this a long time ago. I guess I really never had a huge need until I decided to setup a "music server" because I got tired of keeping mine and my wife's Macbooks, my Imac, both ipods and my FLAC player all synced with the latest cd rips or digital downloads. It still has to be done, but with a common storage place and syncing software, it's much easier. That's when iTunes became a REAL issue with me. I don't know why it never hit me before, but the fact that it doesn't auto-sync to a library is idiotic. I guess it did always bother me a bit, but I dealt with it. When I decided to re-rip my entire CD collection to FLAC, it became a huge issue. At that point, I became motivated to find a way to connect it as a drive and use a syncing app. Lo and behold, I found Rockbox. Yay for me!
 
The coolest part is it will play FLAC as well as 24/96 files. Whodathunk? A huge thank you to all of the developers out there and the person that figured out how to get it to connect to a Mac even after Rockboxing.

I was wondering, too, so I googled it.  It's an aftermarket upgrade using a 240 GB Toshiba HDD (maybe others manufacture that size).
 
I replaced the battery in my niece's old iPod a few years ago.  There was a guide to follow, and it wasn't too difficult.  Not sure about newer iPods, but I can't believe it's that tough.  Still, $175-$200 for the drive... too rich for me, but I've got the 160 GB.  If I had a model with a less then 100 GB HDD, I'd be tempted.

  Here is where you should start for the steps to changing the V/Pid. One other thing I should note is I did all of this in Linux (Ubuntu) as I have my Mac setup with it in dual-boot configuration. That's a bit of work in itself. But, if you're adventurous and have any interest in Linux, it's the way to go. You may be able to do it in Windows but I'm not sure. You won't be able to do on the Mac until you get it to recognize the iPod. Catch 22!

IMO, it's all worth it to be free from iTunes AND Windows. I hope this helps. Mac users shouldn't be left out of this awesome iPod mod.

I compiled it with Aroldan's patches. 
There are 2 version builds which compiled with GCC 4.4.4 provided by rockbox and GCC 4.8.2 which is the latest compiler from GCC.
I was wondering if the latest compiler can provide a better optimization or introduce more problems.

I'm now hosting a daily build of Rockbox for the iPod Classic, with only the Vendor and Product USB IDs changed to "0x123A" and "0x456B" respectively, which aren't currently assigned. That build will make a Rockboxed iPod Classic work on OS X. No other patches are applied.

What are the differences between "iPod video" themes and "iPod Classic" themes?
 
(I've always used iPod video themes with no issue)

Currently they're the same because they share the same screen resolution (320x240), but if the iPod Classic port ever gets a new theme feature that uses a specific part of the Classic's hardware / capabilities, then some new themes will be listed for the Classic and not the iPod Video (and vice versa).

Works great but when i connect to my car stereo the ipod enters 'Panic Mode' and im forced to reboot it. Shouldnt be working like a regular pen now?

It doesn't, but of course it can be used as a USB mass storage device (like a USB flash drive). Perhaps I wrongly assumed that's what Kamikazy was trying to do?
