i just got one yesterday and ive only used a flash memory player in the past so i dont know if this is normal or not.

1. is the harddrive supposed to be fairly audible? when i was sitting in a really quiet place i could hear all the clicks and the spin up and the noises associated with hard drive usage. if you hold it close to your ears (3-4 inches) are you supposed to hear it really clearly?

2. is the ipod supposed to be sluggish? i know it probably cant match a lower capacity flash based player but this is really slow in comparison. half the time i have to wait there almost for a second before anything happens. and the scroll circle activates after a time delay. is that just because of the hard drive?

3. there are 3 dead pixels on the screen already. obviously that is not normal but is it bad enough for me to ask them to replace it. the dead pixels were found out of the box. usually lcd manufacturers have a minimum for replacement - ~8 dead pixels. dont know if apple has a similar minimum. but since the ipod was purchased day before from best buy i dont have any problems with going to them and asking them for a replacement if any of the above 3 things is found off.

thanks in advance for the help.

1. yes the harddrive is audible
2. yes the ipod is kinda sluggish probably because it's loading a lot of data (ie. complete track listings, etc) from a harddrive.
3. you should exchange, there should be no dead pixels.

I know loading jpegs from albumart especially if there embedded in each track can be sluggish for the ipod to read. I think there's a few programs that can rip these images out, might increase track loading speed.
