iPod 5.5g, considering what to do with it.

So, I bought an iPod 5.5G 240gb (!) from eBay yesterday, and I've been thinking and reading a lot about it. But, I'm getting conflicting information again and again, so I wanted some more probably conflicting info. <_<

Batteries: Are there batteries out there that would give me some extra juice? 240gb = Lots of movies as well as Rockbox-driven music (Which I think reduces run time slightly).

LoD: Provides a line-out... But, how does it work? Some emulate docks, giving a line out interface based on the iPod sound? And others emulate a DAC --> Line interface, if used with a iMod/DIYMod? Comparison chart of available LoDs anywhere? Recommendations ~$100?

iMod / DIYMod: Previously mentioned. What do these do EXACTLY? I know with the 4G, it turns the HP out into a line-level out, but, what exactly does it do with the 5.5G, and does it provide any benefit, especially if I want to use a LoD/Amp?

Amps: Your favorite amps to drive your favorite iPod/LoD setup? Your favorite cans/IEMs to use with them aswell? I've got my SRH440, DT331, and SF5P, so those are preferred pairings, though I've been looking at getting IE8s in a few months.

Thanks. = D

Batteries: Yea there ARE batteries out there but that would require you to do some internal work; not saying it's hard but I don't know if you want to do all of that.

LoD: There are cables made by people that give you a near line out sound; you can't control the volume on the ipods so you HAVE to have a portable amp. You get better sound out of the dock connection along with a boost from the amp but it can get costly if you want the best.

iMod: It's a rewiring of the inner circuits so you actually DO get a line out signal; you have to use special dock cables though; and they are expensive (around 500 new at AloAudio)

Amps: I've been using the iBasso T4 and loved it but I recently sold it go get a RSA tomahawk and LOVE it. Only used it for around 15 minutes but as soon as my T51 gets here it's going to get a lot of use.

So yea that's just all of that in a nutshell. If you have ANY questions feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to help

what you can do with it depends on your budget. all the options are pretty much mentioned in the post above. I would however rockbox it as that is free

From there it depends on how you want it to be setup. You can however get a lod+amp and that can get expensive or you can just keep it at rockbox and get a better phone and then look for upgrades afterwards.

Wow, I thought this would've died. <_<

I have nothing against opening up the iPod, so, where can I get extended batteries? My Google powers are weak.

I did just pick up an ALO BlingBling LoD and PA2V2 portable amp for an amazing price, and think I'm going to start with that, and see where it takes me. I still have to decide if I want a full-size, travel, or IEM phones with my iPod rig. (Been looking into the D2000 or IE8s. Preferring closed phones or IEMs).

I also did plan on Rockboxing it, the only concern I have is battery life. On the Wiki, it shows that battery life is halved using FLAC L8 files...

Just reminded me of a question. Are Imods still pocket portable? What is the dock/cap thing people keep on mentioning about for them? Does that mean its expected for a tabletop setup?

That all depends on how big your pockets are?

All iMod require a amp to control the volume. Caps are required in the iMod to run, if you have a 4th gen ipod the caps are inside the case of the ipod but if you have a 5th gen the caps are inside the LOD. If you a referring to the VCaps those are larger caps that are used to get the best sound out of the iMod.
You can find more info about all of this at Products > iMod - Red Wine Audio

So with the LOD version of the caps on the 5gens. It is still pocketable for the average head-fi'er. Aah...icic

The iQube is a perfect form-factor match for the iPod.

The 5.5G has the Wolfson DAC, so iMod is very much worth it. You are getting signal right off the DAC, bypassing the analog amp circuit. With a regular non-iMod LOD, you bypass only the volume control, which is cool to get a nice line out, but not as good as the iMod signal. Indeed the special iMod LOD is expensive -- you 'gotta find 'em used.

iMod plus special LOD is still very portable, the extra size of the connector is minimal. See pictures at ALO.

My main portable rig is 80GB 5.5 Gen iPod, iModded by Vinnie himself at RWA, ALO LOD for iMod (bought used, still expensive), iQube v1, AT-ES7's or Shure 500s, all lossless files. Airline personnel and gym rats all over the world have been astonished by the SQ (I get a lot of questions). When size is an issue I switch to 8 GB Nano 4G (same general look and feel as the 80GB, just smaller, honey I shrunk the iPod) and a Shadow with a normal LOD ... do not believe the SQ is as stellar.
