I really love this application for the iphone, I use it all the time. I have a question, I really don’t understand why I’m able to control the volume from the phone when using optical cable from my mac. I would have though it would have been straight digital out. Any ideas?

Most likely, you're controlling the volume setting in iTunes, not the master volume on your Mac. The master volume should be locked when using the optical output. Many application have their own volume controls that allow you to mix their volume relative to each other. For example, you might not want system alert beeps to play at maximum volume. I seem to remember that I was once able to lock iTunes volume control also, but I can't figure it out now...
