Iomega ScreenPlay HD as Source?

So, I've been on the IOM mailing list for years now. Maybe because of that HipZip I owned long ago. Anyway, I've been ignoring their messages for the longest time (yeah, maybe I should've unsubscribed). Tonight, however, I see what appears to be yet another external hard drive. 360 GB. $159. Nothing special, so far. Then, just because I wanted to see how far down the rabbit hole this thing goes, I decided to determine what this "Multimedia" device actually does. How to do this? Well, the most important criterion for me to determining whether it is useful is to answer this question: Does it have a coaxial SPDIF output? Lo and behold, shock and awe, it does! Now, I must admit, I know nothing else about it right now. I don't even understand how a hard drive could on it's own transmit a SPDIF signal. So, I reason, there must be something else at work here. I will do more investigating...In the meantime, please discuss.
