Hello to everyone here.
I have been reading this forum for a few weeks and decided to do the decent this by opening an account here.
A little about myself:
I'm English, married to a Chinese wife and living in China. My days of box sized multi-channel amps and a room surrounded by speakers and the like are over. Although my wife owns a nice, somewhat big, Hi-Fi setup, apartments are not really the place to boom movies or music. Besides, headphones are portable, which means being able to listen to music in any room of the house and enjoy good music even on holiday. I am beginning to simply enjoy the headphone experience more anyhow.
I have recently purchased a pair of AKG 272 headphones, a FIIO 06k and FIIO 10K to go along with my laptop and ipod touch with a nice Nobility cable, (Chinese brand).
While the above setup is a absolute major improvement over my iphone and Sony MDR-EX450, it's still not quite there for me. I have two options,
1) Experiment with open-headphones, I'm thinking Sennhieser HD555 with an upgrade to FIIO 11K, or 2) Push the boat out and just buy Sennhieser HD600 with an Aune B1. This is my mind for January time. A better DAP may have to wait a little longer, but then again the FIIO X3 seems to receive good reviews, so that has been catching my eye.
Although there are some outstanding Hi-Fi shops, (bose seems to be the brand of choice locally), around where I live, none really cater to the headphone market, so I really need to rely on reviews on this forum, and simply spend the money until I find what I truly like and can live/be satisfied with.
I usually enjoy Classical music and headphones for movies late at night when everyone has gone to bed. Other music types don't need to be an exact fit, but I think neutral sound is the safest way for me to go at present. I hate over the top bass, any form or bass switches, equalizers or anything that interferes with true sound. I know some may say such things can help get closer to true sound, but that's not how I want to do it.
Regarding sound, I think the most important for me is a headphone/amp that can convey the emotion. Headphones are already, in my view, way ahead of speakers for facilitating this, but if I can truly feel Karajan conducting Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, or truly feel the emotion of a movie with its score, I'm quite a happy man.
I want to thank everyone for thier advice here, it really has been a huge, huge help. I would not have had a clue where to have started without all your reviews, comments and help given here. So, thank you.
