I haven't posted in here yet, because I've been all wrapped up in the Headphone/Amplifier/Source/Portable forums - but I figured it was time to introduce myself here too.. seeing as the reason I'm interested in all those gadgets is - well, so I can listen to more music.

My musical interests are pretty varied. If I were to list my top five bands, they would probably be

Radiohead
The Tragically Hip
The Cure
Nine Inch Nails
Tool

but lately I've also been listening to a lot of

Mogwai
Interpol
The Flaming Lips
Blur
System of a Down
Ocean Colour Scene
Super Fury Animals
Liz Phair
Our Lady Peace
Filter
Coldplay
Travis
Chicane
Telepopmusik
Godspeed you Black Emperor
Gordon Downie
The Flaming Lips
Sigor Ros
The Velvet Underground
Unbelieviable Truth
Massive Attack
Gorillaz
Static-X

but I have also started listening to Beethoven, and the Baroque period. I like Motzart, but I find him a bit too intense to just listen to mindlessly while I do other work..

Welp, I guess that's about it for an intro.

Hi there!,

It seems that what you like, for the most part, I do as well. Looks to be the beginning of something beautiful... blah blah blah.

Ever tried progressive rock? Such as early Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, etc.? When I got into many of the bands you mentioned below, it evolved into a complete and thorough love for the great music mentioned by the three groups above. I know it's far-fetched, as most of the music sounds nothing alike, but it's the complicated instrumentals and musical exasperation that got me hooked. Just wonderful music, IMO.

So, try out Yes' 'Close to the Edge', King Crimson's 'Red' and Genesis' 'Selling England By the Pound' and then report back to my, private!

Good.

Hey Trounce.

Sure thing. I am going to go shopping this weekend, and I will see if I can find any of those CDs at A and B Sound or Virgin Records iN Vancouver and audition them.

Where abouts in Toronto do you live? I used to live in Toronto until about 9 months ago?

I haven't really been in the music forum much either. My favorite current jazz artist is probably Jason Moran (who I'm seeing tonight, which I'm psyched about). My favorite current composer is probably John Adams (who I'll probably put next in my playlist!)

I think my diet is rather rock deficient. I have some Radiohead and plenty of The Cure albums, but there's not much overlap in our listening it seems (except maybe that Beethoven dude).

Clutz, I live just north of Toronto, in Markham. Nice place, it is. Where did you live?

If I were to suggest a single album out of the three I named, it would be Genesis 'Selling England by the Pound'... a true, unbridled classic.

You mentioned the flaming lips twice

My musical tastes acually seem to be pretty simlar to yours, meaning you have good tastes

Now that you've either gotten or are still looking for a decent rig, you gotta sit back and enjoy it. I often find that alot of head-fi'ers are more equiptment collectors than true audiophiles (As in, people who truly love music)

I lived in Scarborough/Scarberia/Scarlem. Hehe.. Actually I lived in a nice area of Scarborogouh, near Pickering - though not as nice as where I am living now.

My girlfriend's parents live in Markham up around Warden and 16th avenue.

Alright, I'll go look for that album tomorrow.

Oops! Two times the flaming lips! Teehee.

I'm glad I have good taste in music.. err..
smily_headphones1.gif
similar to yours.. Hehe.

I have an okay rig. It's not nearly as fancy as some peoples.. I have a low end mid-fi system at home, mostly Pioneer stuff- and I'm looking to improve my source and amplifier over the next few years. At school/work I listen on my PowerMac, and when I commute I currently use my Panasonic SL-SX500 and SL-CT790 (it's easier than swapping CDs in transit), with a pair of Sennheiser HD590s..

But yeah, enjoying the music is the big thing, isn't it.

Ahh, the tunes.

Listening to blur- 13 right now.. I have to get Think Tank this weekend..

My list of CDs to buy right now, or comig out soon are

Radiohead- Hail to the Thief
Blur- Think Tank
Gordon Downie- Nude Art
Spacehog - A Spacehoggesy
System of a down- Steal this Album
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (I lost my copy)
and the Genesis Album suggested above..

So much music.. so little time (and money..)

Clutz, you need a copy of Aarktica's Pure Tone Audiometry. Check Darla - there's a review/MP3/purchase link right on the front page.

Methinks you will enjoy it greatly.

I've never seen that site before.. Oh man.. that's audio nirvana.

Thanks

The biggest problem I'm having lately - is that I'm starting to realize that a 15GB iPod will not suffice..

I think I'm going to have to buy a 120GB HD for this monster just to listen to music.
