I have been travelling, so sorry for the tardy reply but others have pitched in .
I find it easiest to start with Genres. Even though my Rock, Pop genre is huge, it is still much easier to navigate that without other genres being mixed in.
My genres on the opening Files Screen of the LPG are Bluegrass; Blues; Classical; Jazz; R&B, Soul; Rock, Pop; Soundtrack; and World. I created these large and basic genres to keep things simple. So for example, R&B, Soul includes my diminutive rap collection. Bluegrass extends to country like Dixie Chicks. And Rock, Pop is everything from Big Bopper to Beatles to Genesis to Metallica to Depeche Mode and onwards. (I used to have a Folk genre but it is now also folded into Rock, Pop, so really broad.)
My folder structure goes Genre > Artist > Album > Song. In a rare situation where I have a bunch of random songs from an Artist rather than distinct albums, I just create an 'album' called "Compilation".
The key is that you do this with all of your music once on your computer and then you have it forever and just keep adding to it. You then copy it over as needed to the PAW Gold or other music player.
A sensible filing system mate and one I've been meaning to implement for years! Must get started on it this weekend
