I have tried several sets of iPod based portable speaker systems over the past several years. I use the JBL "On Stage" speaker sets for work. They fit well in my lockers, and have an AC adapter. Not sure, but I think they can use batteries as well. I like the Apple big speaker box for the kids playroom, or when I want to play music outside at home or the beach.
I have not found a really satisfactory small set of portable speakers though that would fit in my brief case and travel with me. I have pretty much relied on my iPod/cryodoc/Hornet/UE10pros for my travelling needs. I can just play the music from my laptop if I am looking for mood music on the road without my headphones on.
After you get used to the music quality from a good system, even small like the one I can carry easily in my pocket, its hard to put up with a tinny small set of plastic speakers with very limited range and poor SQ.
Don't know if you can still get these but for portable sound in a reasonable size and price, they are outstanding - built in rechargable battery, remote and an excellent protective carrying case.
I highly recommend you check some of the reviews at www.ilounge.com - they cover almost every portable set going - there is so much variety in size and price, it is difficult to recommend just one but I liked the mm50 so much I bought 2 of them
I use the rather bulky Altec-Lansing IM9's. They're not small, but I just couldn't stand the awful sound that comes from so many smaller portable speakers.
They use four C-sized batteries to power the Class D amp, and I've run them for more than 24 hours without needing to replace the batteries, and this is with the volume set pretty high (I used them to play a soundtrack for a RPG session a bunch of us had. The session lasted 10 hours, and I continued to use the speakers for another 5 days on and off, before the batteries finally gave out.)
The sound is very bass-heavy, which muddies some of the midrange, but the speakers are two-way, with a tweeter that manages to save some of the upper frequencies. These are -not- for audiophile listening, but their sheer dB output (they go VERY, VERY loud without distorting), unbelievable bass for the size, and Cowon-esque battery life constantly reaffirm my decision to purchase the iM9.
