I called ELNA up to find out where to get the Silmic (ROS) capacitors, and they informed me they sold them in quantities of 1000+. I found out the price of 1000 470uf 16V, the value I needed, and it came out to about .11 a cap, or $110 plus UPS ground shipping and COD charges. The lead time on the caps is 8-10 weeks. The problem is I only need 10 caps, and I can't afford to pay $110 for extra caps I don't need, and since I'm not a commercial DIY'er (I haven't even got a fully working Cmoy yet
wink.gif
) there's no way I'm ever going to use up 1000 caps. Unless I build 500 non-working Cmoys

. I'd be insane if I didn't quit before that happened. Anyways if anyone's interested in going in with me for audiophile caps for less than cheap Nichicons at Mouser, PM me.

Deja-Vu... I had just contacted Elna about the same thing about three weeks ago.

I would take approximately 100 of them, if that's any help. The voltage rating is a bit lighter than I prefer, but Silmics are kind of large.

Keep me posted!

16WVDC is too low for many applications. 35WVDC is a reasonable value if you want to get more people in on it. Also, consider 1000uF, although this may make it too large to fit the META42 board. (Sorry, I don't have an Elna chart on me.)

Since the META42 only takes 12.5mm wide PS caps, the only choices are 470uf 16V, 330uf 25V or 220uf 35V. I prefer either 470/16 or if necessary 330/25, but I have some hungry K240S's to feed

. Plus the first batch is going in a Cmoy. But if 220 can do it in the Coby PCDP that I'm forced to use right now, 220 can probably squeak by in a Cmoy.

You can always throw in another pair (in your cmoy) if they are 220uF/35v, to get the capacitance up there.

I kind of ran out of steam with my pursuit of the Silmics, because without samples to listen to, I couldn't rationalize the tradeoff for capacitance vs construction. I'm still very interested, and can work around some of these limitations.

I have to go through a distributor, I'll keep you guys posted. Future Electronics is going to call me back with a minimum quantity. Finally a place that didn't care I wasn't a company.

Here is what I was quoted by THL in Hong Kong:

Following are requested order amount both with case and without chassis case.

R2915 Tuning knob, 1 pc at NT$250/pc = NT$250
PRAL-1mg Mini alum chassis case, (1 unit size) (natural finish), at NT$1200
RK27112A, 50k Alps Pot, at NT$450
ELNA Miniature SILMIC ARS series 16/470 12.5 x 25mm (quantity=20), at NT$90= NT$1800
ELNA Miniature SILMIC ARS series 25/220 12.5 x 20mm (quantity=20), at NT$85= NT$1700
ELNA Miniature SILMIC ARS series 50/1000 18 x 41mm (quantity=16), at NT$250= NT$4000
ELNA Miniature SILMIC ARS series 50/2200 25.5 x 50mm (quantity=16), at NT$330= NT$5280

order amount at NT$14680
shipping by EMS at NT$760
2% card fee at NT$309
Total of order shipment at NT$15749(US$455)

If without chassis case total as below;
order amount at NT$13480
shipping by EMS at NT$560
2% card fee at NT$281
Total of order shipment at NT$14321(US$415)
Approximately 34 New Taiwanese dollars = $1 USD. Prices on ther Silmics are PER EACH. Thus, $2.64 per 16v/470uF Silmic not including S/H for a quantity of 20.

I think your quoted price of $0.11 each looks very attractive, though I'd rather see the 25v or 35v value instead.

Just a thought.

Oh, one other thing, while I appreciated Vincent Chang's (THL) courtesy in quoting me on a few different configurations, I also contacted Michael Percy about seeing if he could get me into some Silmics. He said he had a few Cerafines in odd values kicking around, but that he was getting a generally better reception to the Nichion Muse series (in low voltage miniatures, at least).

So, I did end up buying a few different values from Percy. The discounts come fairly early, 10% after 10, and 25% after 25 (within the Muse lineup, same value). I do have a few Cerafines on hand, so I hope to do some comparisons, at least. I should get the Muse caps in later this week.

But I still want to check out the Silmics

Strike out #1 at Future. I called Capacitor Associates in MN for some info, so they are going to be getting back with me. I asked for price/availiability on 1000 330uf 25V ROS capacitors. They have to order them from ELNA. Nobody wants to stock audio grade capacitors
