Hi2all!

Some nice (& daring) fellow by the name of Jürgen (aka Buckaroo Banzai on iRiver's forum) opened up his iHP-120 & took a few pics of it (which are online @ ihplounge).

The pics are unfortunately not all that sharp, but I was wondering if any of you mod-heads / DIYers could identify any of the vip components (op-amps, digital o/p stage/connectors, DAC, etc)?

I am curious to see how the iHP-120 rates on a purely technical basis (as I can't complain about the sound quality, but it's all subjective).

Thx for any info - guesses are welcome as long as they are educated

Samsung chip is almost certainly a standard DRAM - memory buffer. Other than that picture is too blurry where it counts to be able to figure it out (you must be able to see the markings on the "big" chips).

well, here's a few quick results from googling and researching ti's site: (these are the easy ones, i'm a total non-EE guy and i got them.)

the 'SUNNY' component is a clocking crystal, 11.2896MHz.

TLV0834I is an A-to-D converter - 8-Bit 41 kSPS ADC Serial Out, Ratiometric Op or Vcc Ref, TTL/MOS Input & Output Compatible, 4 Ch.

lvch16245a is a transceiver - 16-Bit Bus Transceiver With 3-State Outputs

I've responded to your reply in the iRiver forum too.
So again. For that moment I'm in the US. I've got the iHP
semiconductor-data not with me. When I'm back in GER I will
announce it in the forum.

After relounge my web-site on february there will be detail-
photos of the semiconductors and a validation of them.

For all the folks with low web-connection I've compressed
the hires pictures too.

I've got written an service-guide how to open the iHP. It's an
draftprint v1.0 in german only, but it will be translated until mid

the heart of the iRiver iHP Series is the Motorola audio microprocessor SCF5249VF140.

It's desinprocess is bulit up with Motorola's ColdFire Engine.

I'm thinking that this ADC may be used for the FM radio section... Even the Motorola processor has a 12-bit ADC that could be used instead for line-in recording.

The FM radio needs some sort of ADC to feed its signal into the digital audio bus.

I can't beleive the recording is 8 or 12 bits, check out a sample recording here for an idea of the quality. I thought it was pretty good for a portable player with a stock mic.
