Do you lose sound quality if you use the inline remote control on most cd players?

What if I want to use an amp? If I go throught the line-out jack, will I not be able to access the features on the remote?

I have in mind those CD players that are almost completely operated from the remote like the irivers and high end sonys.

You should be able to plug the remote into the headphone jack, and the amp into the line out. No loss of sound quality or convenience.

As for sound quality, the cord between the player and the remote has 3 sound wires and however many signal wires. The signal goes straight through, so your only concern should be the quality of the 3' (or whatever the length is) extension cord.

Then again, my only experience with a remote is the Sony car-kit remote, with four hardwired contacts and three buttons. But I don't think they'd do any different with the higher-end remotes.

Not ALL remotes work like this - a friend of mine has a Philips PCDP, and the remote for that plugs into the headphone jack with an elongated (4-contact) headphone jack - they've just added an extra bit on the end for the button signals. I have heard that this type of remote *may* degrade the sound quality, but i haven't had the opportunity to test it myself.

Oh, I don't know if this is relevant, but my Sony MD player automatically switches the output to Headphone level as soon as you plug in the remote - it doesn't allow a line level output with the remote plugged in (probably set up that way because it only has one output jack).

The way I figure it is, if it's got a seperate socket for the line level output and the remote works plugged in to the headphone jack, it shouldn't make a difference to the sound quality - especially since the line out is connected 'earlier' in the signal chain than the headphone output.
