Justin told me the price would go up once the first batch of new lites went out the door. The price has indeed just gone up to $299, so they may well be on their way to their happy new owners.

Mine is allegedly in the second batch, which, if Justin holds to his 21 day build time, would mean I could get my amp as soon as the end of next week!!!

Justin announced an optional power supply for the lite, but its definitely not a battery pack.

My assumption is that its based on Kevin Gilmore's "ultra-regulated" ps, the idea being that, for $200, you can upgrade the sound of your lite to something more like the sound of a v2.

I will be really curious to hear how well it works. On one hand, its great to offer incremental upgrades to us lite owning newbies. On the other hand, he's offering a $500 lite/ps "package", and the $550 v2, which raises questions about his overall product line strategy:

Will the v2 sound "$50 better" than the new lite/ps upgrade? Will they sound the same, but for $50 you get one box and switchable inputs? Maybe he's planning on announcing the v3 soon, or discontinuing the v2 altogether?

How about an optional Blue Hawaii tube output stage for the Lite?

Just kidding...

Damn, was gonna order it too. At $300, I'm starting to have second thoughts...

Guess now I'll wait on comparisons between the updated version and the original and see if it's worth the price difference over a used original.

I got a couple of emails back from Justin about it last night...it's not a Kevin Gilmore design exactly, but rather a modified version of the Gilmore power supply's first stage of regulation.

Gilmore's ultra-regulated ps (which has two stages of regulation) is, in his own words, "...so over the top and unnecessary that most, if not all, people with this amplifier would not even notice the difference." Not to mention it would probably be more expensive and require a larger enclosure than the Gilmore Lite itself.

The new Gilmore Lite ps should provide a lower noise floor, and with it greater detail and dynamic range.

Head-fi member Gpalmer has said that "the Lite probably has about 85% of the performance of the full V2, maybe more." The power supply upgrade is designed to bring it closer to about 95%.

Justin will doing some creative stuff with the pricing once both the new Lite and the new PS are shipping, like offering a discount on the New Lite/PS package, and maybe even doing a wall-wart "buy-back" program for people who want to upgrade. Personally, I'd probably keep both supplies, to make it easier to transport the amp between home & work.

All of this definitely will have some sort of ripple effect through the rest of the Headamp product line, but Justin's not saying what yet.
