Hello dear forum members,
Ill briefly try to introduce myself and my audio habits, which will be the hard part I guess. So first of all I am really good at remembering music/sounds/noises. Plus I would even say that I rather listen to sounds than to music. So I would listen to any type of music as long as it well euh "tickles that part of my brain" that makes listening an enjoyable experience. I do like classical music from good sources but I also like about any other type like alternative or even electro or crazy remixes. When there is music on it takes about 95% of my focus which sometimes can be annoying since I cannot even think about which track to pick next then. So am I a music lover? I guess it does not really describe it. Am I an audiophile? Well I didnt look into the definition of being audiophile but its also not always necessarily the perfection of natural sound reproduction at least for me. A nice bass just can make one happy sometimes
So I am currently trying to upgrade my audio experience while at the same time making my setup more portable. My current mobile setup comprises of a Philips X1 in combination with a Chord Mojo that just recently replaced my arcam Rpac DAC and objective O2 amp. Since the X1 cannot really be used anywhere but at home I figured that I should keep my eyes open for some nice in-ear headphones. At the same time I feel that I am in need for an "upgrade" anyway. I do like my X1 but I only sometimes have the feeling of being really immersed in the listening experience.
So far I already tried:
- Panasonic RP-HDE10E-S
Why: the concept of the membrane and the specs on paper appeared promising
My impression: these are surely better than any stock mobile-phone headphones but really far from impressive
- Final audio heaven VI
Why: I found a nice offer during an amazon sale week recently
My impression: very nice for vocals, however there is about nothing in the low frequency area plus they were not comfortable in my ears
- Shure SE846
Why: They are supposed to be THE in-ear headphone according to many reviews I read also including nice lows. That was when I didn't yet read a lot about ciems though.
My impression: those are definetely nice. Surely more detailed than my X1. Apart from that I could not "really" enjoy them. Partly because even though they included a bunch of different tips I could not really find one that worked for my ears. I appear to have some strangely shaped ear canals with even different sizes left and right. Plus I did pay about 900 euros for them and they were nice, yes, but to me they did not really sound like 900 euros. Thats when I figured I should maybe look into CIEMs to overcome the problems with fitting the headphones to my ears.
So now it appears that there is a really vast number of small and big companies offering CIEMs. I have the feeling that the more I look the more new ones I find and I cannot quite figure out which one to get. I definitely want a crazy level of detail and a big soundstage as well as "airy" sound. They response does not need to be extremely flat i guess. At least i want some nice bass as well. It should be "fun" to listen to. I dont really care too much about the price if i can find something really good but I think about 1500 euros should be about the maximum i would want to spend right now. Having read tons of reviews I currently think that the Lime Ears Aether might be a nice choice for me.
However i feel kind of lost so maybe you would have some recommendation for me?
