I'll watch the video later tonight. MGB is one of my favourite bands....now that they are split...I guess I will classify MG as my favourite artist. I have tickets to see him on April 7th. I love his voice, his thought in his lyrics and his passion. He is an absolute prick and epitomizes an artist....but...I don't care, buddy can write, sing and jam. I love his stuff. |
Hope you enjoy the concert. I'm seeing the show on April 19th in Vancouver. If you want to know what to expect, Matt says that there will probably be 5 MGB songs played on the Avalanche tour, but probably only 3 each night, and the rest of the songs will be from Avalanche. Also there's a song called "4 Minute Mile", a 2 minute rock song that was written but will never be recorded. That was played in the last group of MG concerts, not sure if it will be played in the future... The old songs have been all been reworked, some drastically (The Future Is X-Rated is a slow song, Running for Home is now a rock song) and some not so drastically (Apparitions seems to be pretty close to the original).
Anyhow, I saw them rehearsing back in September, and some guy came up to Matt and asked him if the new album was gonna be good and the reply was "Well, it's the best stuff that I've ever written, for sure." Also, he's said that he "adores" the album unlike all of his past work. You should see some of the comments he made about AOB and Underdogs, the only album he's alright with is BM, all of the other ones, he has problems with them.
Anyways, you probably wouldn't know this, since Matt's kept a relatively low profile in the past year and a half, but he's actually not an *******. I used to think he was, I would read interviews of his and would wonder what the hell was up his ass. Then as I read them more carefully, I realized that there were lots of reasons for the comments that he'd made, ranging from his smoking, to being in a band that was falling apart, making albums that he didn't like in the end, to being a recluse, to being hit in the face with a shoe at a concert while singing 'Apparitions', to having a stalker break into his home, to receiving hundreds of death threats from people who didn't like his opinions, etc.
Lots of those problems are now gone, and he's a lot happier. Quit smoking, quit the band, works with people who he likes, has fun on tours, makes the albums that he adores, having more trust with his fans, and learning to watch what he says more carefully. So, he's no longer a prick. He's just as opinionated as the next person, except that he's actually a very smart person.

yeah, i'd have to agree w/ Zanth. i really don't like the guy a lot, but his music is pretty good. however, i really think he could do more with it. everything he's done seems to have the same style, and to be honest, while his lyrics are quite creative and original, they really don't make much sense. it's as though he's trying to be all "deep" but i'm just not feeling it.
i like matt good, but i believe his best work is behind him (i.e. Beautiful Midnight and Underdogs). |
He could do more with his music, true. I hope he does do more, too. I'll be waiting outside the music shop two weeks from tuesday, eager to hear the new album, and I really think that it will be a great album. The two new singles have so far been good, but not as hard-hitting (emotionally) as I was expecting/hoping them to be. We'll see soon enough though how the new album stacks up.
Oh, the lyrics. For years I never knew what the **** they meant. There are some fansites out there with quotes of Matt explaining what certain songs are about, and he always gets asked about what his lyrics mean, and sometimes he answers, sometimes he doesn't, but everytime he says "...but you can take them however you want. They're about what you want them to be about, I'm not gonna restrict a song to be about only one thing."
So, I guess you really gotta think about lots of the lyrics, and even then, you still don't know. But if there's a song out there that stumps you, just tell me which one, and I might be able to tell you what it means, whether it's my opinion or Matt's, or just general consensus on it.
Best work, behind him? I dunno. Underdogs had some real gems, of course, but it also had some not-so-great ones, dont you think? BM was good all the way through, and AOB had some excellent songs and some crappy ones, and some decent ones. It doesn't really feel like one albums. It was described as being foru people pulling the album in four completely different directions, with an englishman (the producer) stuck in the middle.
Anyways, it's late, I'm bored, I can't get to sleep, and I talk too much.
What did you think of IAWCC? Have you heard Weapon? (See my link.)
Goodnight folks. I need my shuteye.
