Someone I know was complaining about the anti-skip features (or lack of) of the iMP-550 that he recently bought. I noticed that there was one individual in particular on this forum loudly complaining about that too. So I just thought I'd include this in case someone else was having similar problems. While the duration of anti-skip is decided in the menu system, the anti-skip can be defeated, possibly by accident.

The anti-skip is shown on the remote display next to the album name.

The folder icon showing up here means that the anti-shock is NOT enabled.

For anti-shock to be active, this icon must be showing instead of the folder icon.

The change is made by moving the top right jog dial to the right, and holding until the anti-shock modes change.

excuse me but i think that the folder still means that there is shock protection, just the other icon means even more (by using a different algorith that takes up more battery power (possibly by spinning the disc more often?)). But w/ the folder icon there definetely is skip protection.. i've owned an sp-250 w/ hacked iriver f/w (so basically i turned it into a imp-250) for like 2 years (its actually broken now...). While the skip prot. works better with the other icon it still works w/ the folder. Plus im an iRiver worshipper so i know.... haha.

so i dunno but in my experience w/ other iriver players the little icon means just more skip protection... also something you might wanna check is if that little icon is a circle w/ the text "ET" in the middle... this is ettiquette mode, ettiquette mode is when the player doesnt really do any buffering and reads the tracks to almost completely eliminate mechanical sounds but this severely impacts player skip protection

Heh, I suppose he's talking about me.

I know how to change the anti skip. I tried all three modes(normal, super anti shock whatever, and ET), they all worked like crap.

Even the 350 skipped a BIT on me(not as bad), the 550s I assume just had a lot of bad models when they first came out, since I got two bad ones. Even the 350'd skip on me if I changed tracks while walking. The laser on these players can't keep up with the buffer, apparently, since I rarely get my Panasonic SL-CT800 skipping with audio CDs with 10 second anti skip.
