Buy imod from Ken at ALO for $550.

Save about ~$100 +SH if you buy it with your prices listed above.

Actually I've found it to be a great source, plus it's portable. Try doing that with your CD Player. Good luck luggin around your generator, and better hold extra still as skip protection.

Obviously hes not claiming you to buy a cdp to lug around. Just trying to state the obvious that alot of people dont realize. Its portable audio, it only gets so good. and for 800+ USD You can buy almost any piece of crucial listening room equipment that will give you a real listen to your music. Im the same way you are, simply eager to hear the best of the best, but you have to draw the line somewhere. I guarantee you there will be bigger better things then the imod within a year, and then youll be selling your imod trying to lose as little money as possible. You can "IMOD" any player to sound as good i bet and pay less. Simply IMOD is popular because apple spends more money then any other promoting and advertising to make this trend last as long as they can and squeeze as much money out of the unsuspecting public as they can. TA DA!

Or you can get the 4G iMod and save yourself a couple hundred bucks, and use an existing IC.
I'm sure there are sonic differences, but is it really worth the ~$300 difference?
I doubt it, unless you really want the extra storage space, or the use of the headphone out.

I don't really see the use of using the headphone out on a 5G iMod though, considering you paid premium for it, then you might as well reap all of the sonic benefits at all times.
Else you might as well go 4G and use the money you save to buy a smaller DAP for when you want to be really portable.

At first when I heard the announcement of the 5G iMod I was slightly disappointed, because it was only a few months after I'd gotten my iMod with the notion that the 5G iPod was not imoddable.
Just sheer human nature I suppose to want to have the newest/best, or distaste because your product has become outdated.

Looking back on it now, I don't really mind, because I highly prefer the using the headphone out jack for my IC instead of the dock, this makes the whole setup more "pocketable" for me, and I can use the lineout for other things like a battery pack when needed.

Just my 2 cents on an alternative.

Please look at it with wider perspective. I would have personally prefer to burn $ on a PC/Benchmark DAC1/Fancy Cables/RSA B-52/DT990 (600 oHm) for my rig. BUT the problem is I am a VERY mobile person and being a "Portable Audio Junkie", iMod+Amp+IEM gives me Sonic Bliss wherever I go and I do listen a lot when I am moving about. When at home I prefer to just sit and watch Cable TV. I believe there's an equal number of people out there who enjoy stellar audio quality on the move as those who prefer to sit down in a quiet place with their home rig.

You can take this with a grain of salt, since I am one of the people with a 4g iMod on the FS forum right now, but I completely agree with this post. If you really want the best sounding portable option, the 4g iMod is definitely the better deal than the 5g, because mini to mini cables are much less likely to break in your pocket than line out docks. The 5g is really more of a transportable source than a truly portable source.

The only reason I'm considering selling mine is that it sounds so good, it's starting to have detrimental impacts on my life. Whereas I used to do all kinds of things with my free time, I now spend 2 or 3 hours almost every night just listening to music. This is what the iMod has done to me. I feel like an addict, and it may be time to quit cold turkey.

I think for most people on the head-fi forums, what we do is a hobby and, as such, there should really be no complaint as to price. If are enough that is willing to pay then there is someone willing to sell, i.e., Vinnie's iMOD. If not, then Vinnie would not have lasted this long, as there would be no incentive.

And since these forums aren't censored or regulated (to an extent) then any person would be able to voice any concerns or problems that may arise with any product. Really, other than the price, the iMOD has had no other major complaints. And even then, the pricing complaints are only those people who cannot afford it and not those that have aready purchased an iMOD and feel "ripped off." I have yet to see a sufficient number of messages that would deter one from purchasing an iMOD or making someone that has already made the purchase second-guess their decision. That alone should be enough to convince anyone who treats this as a hobby to dive in.
