imod + lineout + external dac = overkill?

don't all three things listed above essentially accomplish the same thing and is there really that big of a difference when you have all 3 going at once?

Edit: I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere an article about a external dac for the iPod. The price? You could buy a small car for less.

well i was inspired by the subject when i saw someone with an imod > alo dock > porta corda move in the rig post. is it not possible to use the dac of the move when attached to an imod?

Yes,
You'll need an digital output for using an external DAC, which the imod doesn't have. It just have an analog output. So as genetic says it's impossible to use an external DAC with the imod. But i'm pretty sure a good external amp will sound very good when paired with the imod.

If you are really into the external DAC stuff, i'd suggest you the Iriver H1xx. The only DAP that has optical output that i know of ...

BTW, the Move dac is only good for PC USB connections. It does not provide optical/coax DAC functions.

You could always connect a regular iPod to a computer via USB, then play the iPod within itunes. Connect the computer to any DAC you want via Toslink. Of course, that would remove all portablitity from the setup.

i was just curious if one bypasses the other like a usb external dac typically bypasses a computer's sound card.
