On Saturday, my family and I are flying to Los Angeles, CA. We'll spend Christmas in Las Vegas, and New Year in New York, NY.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas... (Oh god, please let it snow!).

Plans?

1. Stalk JMT, and find out how he solders so fast...
2. Break into joelongwood's house, and hook myself up with some new cans...
3. Flee back to Australia, never to be seen again.

Two weeks without Head-Fi, how sad.

Your not gonna see snow in Vegas. But look out the window when flying from there to NY and you should see some.

I do remember a relaitve that lived there saying they had snow once. So, it's not impossible.

Snow in NY? With this global warming, it's not likely. You'll still have a blast....and please wear your wallet in your front pocket.

yes, and preferably a pocket with a secure zip. I lived in ny for 23 years and I am still careful with my wallet.

Xmas in Vega has kitsch written all over it, so it should be a blast. Happily married? Renew your vows at a chapel presided over by Elvis. GET the videotape. A friend at work did. It lasts a painless two minutes, but it's so CLASSIC! So funny.

New Years in NYC. That is a beautiful experience. Cops and winos forget their differences. It really is a very surprising show of brotherhood. You'll be surprised by the face the "most dangerous city" puts on! There are so many good vibes going on, that it's infectious.

I've lived in LA and outside NYC (Princeton, but worked in NYC). Here are my recommendations. I'll make them short:

Must do Grauman's Chinese theater LA.
Must do Sound By Singer in NYC!

Have a blast!

There's a scientist who hypothesizes that global warming will shift the gulf stream and actually make alot of us in the northern hemisphere quite a bit colder. Actually, this year the pattern in NYC seems to be 5 degrees hotter than normal in the summer and 5 degrees cooler in the winter

. For the time being, it appears that el nino will assure a cold and wet winter here on the east coast of the USA.

I actually know that it doesn't snow in Vegas, but I was hoping for a white "post-Christmas" in NY. Doesn't look like it's going to happen though.

Thanks a lot for the invitation, but I don't think I will have time. We are only in NY for three days, and I don't think I will be able to attend any mini-meets.

Even though I would love to hear your Grado's. I don't think my dad (I'm only 18) would let me go to a stranger's house by myself either.

I should host a meet at our hotel!

I gotta agree, it has been pretty wet so far. I don't mind if it doesn't snow, it causes all kinds of problems with getting around in the city.

Do they pick-pocket, or do they just ask you nicely to hand it over?

I've got to rush to the defense of my home town. The FBI just released crime stats for American cities (population 100,000 and up -- NYC is the biggest with 8 million+). With a ranking of one being the most dangerous, NYC's crime rate was 197 out of 217 cities rated. Right between Provo, Utah and Rancho Cuchamunga, California. So NYC is *really* safe by the standards of American cities, which means normally safe by Euro/Canadian/Australian standards. Just act sensibly, and avoid the three-card monte games.

If you end up downtown by the World Trade Center site, do check out J&R music world, which is only a block away. They've got headphones, personal electronics of every sort, cameras, CD's, DVD's, toasters, luggage... the list goes on and on.

If you're on the lower east side, experiencing NYC's Jewish immigrant heritage and perhaps checking out one of the specialty pickle stores, check out the retail outlet of etronics.com (info is on their web site), which has *amazing* prices on a good selection of cans. Truly, if your passions are headphones and pickles, I doubt if there's a better place in the word for you. If not, it's probably a bit far off the beaten track.

Edit: skip the lower east side on Saturdays. Everything is closed.

hehe, its actually extremely safe here. Most people get nervous and think their gonna killed, not so. Just be a smart citizen and be aware of your surroundings, map out where your going ahead of time. Fortunately, most of the streets in Manhattan are in a grid, making it very easy to walk around. Check out Chinatown, i definitely recommend it.
