Yesterday I did a classic Head-Fi impulse buy and picked up some HD497's, just to see how my impressions of them might have changed since I first bought, and returned, them a year ago. At that time I didn't like their lack of bass compared to the Pro-35's that I was used to. I got a set of Sony MDR-V6 and was happier with them. Now my opinions of them have changed a bit. Powering them from my amp, they actually had too much bass for me at first. I noticed that they aren't as exciting as my Beyer DT770's, but at the same time easier to listen to. The vocal range is fuller, although slightly veiled sounding. My Beyers obviously blow them away in detail, but I am surprised that I now like the HD497. I haven't even burned them in much yet (only got 6 hours use so far). I think their overall smoother sound is the main thing I like.

My tastes have been changing over the last year I think. I don't know if I'm as much of a bass-a-holic as before since I don't even really like the Koss titanium-driver series due to their excessive bass. In another thread where I was asking about Grados, lini suggested I try something less bass heavy like an AKG 271S. I think I might want to trade my Beyers for something else. I still want some good bass impact, but I want an overall smooth sound with not as much of a high-end as the DT770 or V6, and with a non-recessed midrange. I listen to mainly industrial and some rock, with the occasional oddball classical or Middle-Eastern classical thrown into the mix at times. I think I can go for open cans too, despite the noise in my room, as long as they are circumaural. My price range would be in the same range as my DT770's, about $130 used. I will be using them with an amp, so that's not a problem. Assault me with suggestions...

Thanks usc goose. The main problem I've read about with the HD580 is a lack of bass impact, although they do go deep in the bass. I notice you own the HD600 which are probably quite similar, how do you think these would do with bass heavy music? I have found the HD580 for as little as $160 new, so they are in my price range.

Edit: Are they also as picky about what music they will sound really good with as the DT770?
