So, I've been using a pair of Sony v700 dj headphones for a couple of years, and after reading around it seems most people feel the v700s are at the bottom of the barrel. I'm interested in finding out what a nice headphone should sound like. Could someone recommend me a set of affordable headphones that wouldn't require me to buy an amplifier? I was thinking about buying a set of Grado SR60s just to see if I liked the sound. Do you think I would notice a difference between them and my current Sonys?

Thanks for the help.

The Grado SR60's really rock. My brother couldn't really justify the (very reasonable) price to his wife (or creditors), but he got them anyway. He's a lifetime music lover who had state-of the-art Koss closed headphones from the late 1960's, and he researched open and closed 'phones extensively before determining that the SR60's were an excellent buy -- and about all he could get away with.

He loves them, in all their somewhat weird-looking, but practical splendor.

If you really like rock, but would also like to get into some other stuff, perhaps a pair of Alessandro/Grado MS-1s would be worth a look!

Just grab some GS1000s and you will not have to upgrade again. Well at least not within the Grado line.
