So I finish my Sonic T-amp mods today, replaced the caps and bypassed the surface mount caps. Before hooking it up to my main system I bring it to my desk for a power up to make sure nothings smoking or sizzling. So I hook up my computer as a source and play an mp3. Hooked up a set of old computer speakers, it works! Sounds ok, time to test it on the main system. Here's the weird part....

I disconnect the computer speakers and set them aside. I'm just about to unplug the source and shut the amp off when I hear some buzzing. It's coming from the board... I bend over and put my ear up to the amp. Yep. Definately noise. At first I thought uhoh, somethings sizzling or overheating. Then I notice the noise has a beat! what?! I turn up the volume to full, and I can hear the music. It sounds like the stylus of a turntable up close. I double check to make sure the speakers are disconnected..they're lying on the floor on the other side of my desk.

Not sure about the T-amp, but I've heard some older transistor amps do this and quite a few tube amps do this as well. I have an old integrated amp where the heatsinks for the transistors will sing along to the music when the volume's cranked up high enough, and the transformers on my tube amp do the same thing. I don't know what causes it though, I just know it happens and I've heard it's nothing to worry about.
