I have a pair of SR 80's and I was considering selling them on eBay for about $70 or $80 and then getting a pair of MS-1's. (I have a spare pair of modded pads I can use with them.) Considering that the next step up in Grados/Alessandros (MS-2 and SR 125) are a bit more than I want to spend right now, would the upgrade be worth it?

What's the difference in the sound, compared to the 80's?

Also, on all the pictures I see of the Alessandros, the rods coming from the earpieces look to be more angled than the ones on Grados. Do Alessandros have a different fit?

(Before you tell me to just use the search function, I already have. It seems that the only MS-1 thread with any useful responses compares them to the 125's, not the 80's, so that's not of much use to me.)

hi there...from the best of my experience the ms1s are aq great buy at 99 bucks brand new but if you alreaady have a set of sr 80s the marginal performance increase wont really wow you. Its a little more balanced and a little more put together than the 80s and maybe a tad more detailed but if this whole upgrade costs you more than 20 bucks...id just save my pennies to get the 225s or above instead.

If you can get the upgrade for $20, go for it. The destressed diaphram and improved cable is probably worth that. I haven't a/b'ed them though. The 80 to 225 is a big jump (just did it), but you're talking twice the price. In fact the jump from 80-225 is a bigger one than 225-rs1(did a/b them though not under the ideal conditions).

If you're really broke though, stop all upgrades.

I've got a ms1.Its not worth upgrading from sr80 in my opinion.
they heard almost the same without an amp.
I think its right the reason why grado labs called it ms1 not sr100

I have owned the following Grado/Alessandro headphones in ascending order of my own preference.
1. Grado SR 60
2. Grado SR125
3. Alessandro MS1
4. Grado SR325
5. Grado SR225
6. Alessandro MS2

Going from an SR80 to MS1 is an upgrade, but by the time you negotiate the deal and include shipping, you will be out more than $20!
You are better to wait for SR225s or MS2s to realize a significant improvement in my opinion.

Edit: The best bang for the buck here in my opinion is the Grado SR225.

The only cosmetic differences between the Grado and Alessandro line is on the earpieces themselves. The Alessandros eliminate the button in the middle of the outer grill and the name says "Alessandro Music Series Grado Labs" on the earpiece.
The sound has been tweaked for a more even presentation.
The posts holding the earpieces are the same as Grado but appear to have the small plastic ends glued on onstead of just a push fit.
