I'm back!

(Does anyone remember me anymore????)

I've been kinda active designing subwoofers and HT rooms, so headphones took a bit of a rest. But were never forgotten.

Nice to be here, BTW

So anyway, I'm looking for a Sharp MD with Dolby Headphone. I'm thinking about buying it in New York, since that's where I'll be from Saturday to next Monday (30th). I'll also be in New Jersey. Any ideas where I can get one??? I'm very intrigued about a Dolby Headphone player with a Total Airhead and a set of Ety ER-4S...

Headphones are a lifelong vice, I tell you!

Javier.

I havn't been to this store in a while so I don't know their latest inventory but you could check there. It's on Canal St. You can take 6 or N/R train to Canal St. exit. Walk west past broadway. You will past Pearl Paint and maybe about 6 stores later there's some electronics shop with a few stairs to walk up. They usually have a some portable goodies there.

http://www.audiophilia.com/features/trenchesnyc.htm

Saludos!!!

(Apologies for non Spanish speaking people) Todo parece ir viento en popa, gracias por preguntar.

Abrígate bien y saludos a Lady Liberty.

Ian, you are referring to the place at 324 Canal st. I was there this past weekend.

I was very impressed with their product selelection when it comes to MD's and portable CD's. They seemed to have every single one of the latest models from Japan - at prices that were either the same as, or occasionally $5-10 lower than the online importers like audiocubes.com.

FYI though those guys at 324 Canal seem to give very little room for bargaining, plus they always charge tax and they dont take credit cards. Most places on Canal st usually work deals out with you for no-tax if you pay cash. Also their return policy is pretty much "you buy it, you own it". And they won't even let you test the equipment before you buy it.

Someone in another thread mentioned that there is another very up-to-date store at the corner of Canal and Essex as wel. I haven;t been there yet, though.

324 sounds about right.

I havn't noticed this store on Canal and Essex. I could check it out since I'm close to there.

BW, I'm hunting for a cheap place to buy some Sennheiser MX400's, so if you come across them - or know any good places in that Chinatown/Canal St area (or anywhere in NYC really) please give me a shout. :)

Stay out of small electronic stores. That's the only thing I can honestly tell you.

Not all small stores are bad, but there are some aimed specifically at tourists; they jack up the price of everything to ridiculous levels.

They usually use a ton of silver/mirror like background in their displays. The prices will be on a white card in red letters.

They almost always try to rip you off. Go to a library (tons in NYC) get on the internet and compare online prices to the ones you saw.

Be wary of any small store with shiny display cases.

I am dead serious.

hehe, there was one of these stores located on broadway, off of canal by a block or two (heading north) that was shut down because they sold stuff they shouldn't have been selling...i miss them only because of their MD blank selection.

As a New Yorker I beg to differ. It think the small places offer a lot.

Sure, the small electronics stores on Canal St attract lots of tourists and those guys do make a lot of profits off those people who don't know better. But even those people are often still gettign better prices and choices than they can in their home town.

But local people go there (Canal St & CHinatown in general) too because you can find stuff you can't find elsewehere. On top of that, you can cut great deals there, especially for cash and avoid paying sales tax.

Its up to the buyer to do their researchup front, go out there informed and get what you want at a price you are willing to pay. If you do your homework, those stores are great. Most of those Chinatown places are actually quite dumpy not gaudya t all, they are really all about transactions. You will readily find dingy places that have the latest electronics from Japan that all the big chains will not stock for another 6 months - or may never get at all!

As for the small electronics stores uptown (eg between 34 to 57th St on east and west side), that's a whole different story. Those places are basic ripoff centers. No native New Yorker with any kind of sense would be caught dead in those places...

Personally, I actually prefer to give my business to the little guy. If we all keep spending our money at Starbucks and Barnes & Noble and Best Buy, then pretty soon there isn't going to be any single shred of individuality or character left in our society. And NYC is one of the few places that has somewhat retained individual character, although the national chain stores and surely making their way in, aided by the real estate people who refuse to rent to anyone else. So I'll definitely give my money to the little guys - especially when they are offering prices that are quite competive. Its your society - and you're voting every time you make a purchase.
