nano iDSD (DSD/DXD/PCM)

Small in size, big on technology.

After making its global debut at RMAF and the Tokyo Headphone Festival, the nano iDSD is shipping ~15 December. The iDSD is truly the world’s smallest, portable (only 163g) battery-powered, high-end DAC that natively plays ALL high-res formats, PCM (44.1-384kHz), DSD (5.6/6.2MHz) and DXD (352.8/384kHz) on:
  1. Apple1 iPhone/iPad/iPod and Android2 devices; and
  2. Computers with Windows/Mac/Linux systems;

With quite stunning high-end audio technologies:
  1. C:\Users\COMPUT~1\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image001.png
True Native® playback, Bit-Perfect, Selectable Digital Filters, DirectDrive®, Asynchronous/Zero Jitter USB, Battery-Powered, Precision Analogue Vol Control.

The nano iDSD is a battery-powered, high-end DAC (with headphone amp) that is half the size of the multi-award winning iFi micro series.

Its 1400mAh on-board lithium-polymer battery and powerful headphone output transforms Smartphones (Apple/Android) as well as Computers into a fully-fledged, high-end digital source, all in a palm-sized package.

1With Apple USB Camera Adapter and the relevant Bit-Perfect software player.
2With USB OTG cable and the relevant OS support.

The retail price of the nano iDSD is US$189 (ex-tax) or Euro189/£165 (with VAT).

I agree - quite impressive!   Hard to believe it supports all these features at this price.  Final judgement would be to experience how it sounds!

I'm confused. How do I connect an iPhone 5 to this?

Dec 5, 2013 at 5:45 PM Post #5 of 50
From several web sites reviewing the product, this is what I gather:

iPhone users will need the Lightning adaptor cable
iPad users will need the Camera Connection Kit (CCK)

And the other end of the Lightning cable would be?

I believe (but this needs to be confirmed for sure), that it would be something like this:

iPhone -> Lightning cable -> USB 3.0 adapter -> USB input of iDSD

and example of such adapter:

Wow, that makes it so inelegant.

I don't disagree.

Another option is to use this Apple adapter
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Lightning-Camera-Adapter-MD821ZM/dp/B009WHV3XA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1386292460&sr=8-3&keywords=lightning+to+usb+connector

and then connect a USB 3.0 type A to B to the adapter and to the iDSD.

This appears to be a situation where the technology in the device is ahead of the "cable technology" available in the market, especially when it comes to Apple and USB 3.0

I found another picture that confirms the connection above.  It is using a CCK lightning adapter coming out of the iPhone.  In this picture, an iFi USB 3.0 A to B cable is being used as well

The following are a few snapshots from the iDSD system in the iFi audio room at the recent Guangzhou A/V Fair (Dec 6-8).

Hope you like em....

We left on a jet plane (on Emirates and had a relaxing changeover in Dubai)

iPAD >CCK/USB cable > iDSD > iCAN > Fostex TL-50RP (heavily modded by AMR and not for commercial sale as it costs too much!)

One of the iFi China dealers getting his heavy hitting camera rig out for the 'nano pic'

This lady customer was definitely enjoying the tunes from the nano iDSD setup.

Some more girls going 'ga ga' over the nano iDSD + nano iCAN system.

We're not sure who the chap is in the middle but these two ladies helped us demo the iFi gear.

To say we were chuffed by the response to the iDSD and iCAN was an understatement!

From iFi-audio Japan:

Good news.

The Hi-Res Walkman (F Series; http://www.sony.jp/walkman/lineup/f_series/ and ZX-1; http://www.sony.jp/walkman/lineup/zx1/) can be connected to nano iDSD via Sony's USB conversion cable for audio output WMC-NWH10 (http://www.sony.jp/walkman/products/WMC-NWH10/).

Walkman ZX-1 is the best selling item in Japan (selling more than iPod Touch now).

Yodobashi Camera have informed us that very few portable DACs can handle this output (incl. SONY PHA-2).

We would like to wish all Head-Fi'yers a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Q: the ZX1 can't output DSD though right so it'll be using the iFi at FLAC 24/192 at max? I saw the pix of the combo in Fujiya's tweet a few days ago.
