iFi audio's worst kept secret: the hip-dac!

After posting in the Audio46 pre-order thread I realise I should have asked here instead. Sorry for double posting.

What is the power output for SE and balanced at 300 Ohm?

Any suggestions for good adapters?

My balanced cables are good but cheap maybe is better to buy a new cable for my sennheisers. To my experience they are flying with the ifi audio products.

I just bought a 2.5 to 4.4 from DD HiFi on Amazon and so far it's great. Around $18 or so, too.

xDSD does not use a pot and does not use digital volume control. Hence the question to iFi

Yes I know, but what they did in xDSD is beyond hip-dac's price range most likely. An analogue ladder volume control inside of a chip and managed by some sort of an encoder isn't regular and in xDSD tier quite crazy. To my knowledge many times more expensive desktop products don't do it and that's why I'm not surprised it's not in hip-dac.

Hey @iFi audio. I didn’t get any response from you regarding my post about my faulty Hip-DAC. I’ve since had a replacement that doesn’t have a crooked volume knob (which is great).

I have noticed that with both units I’ve tried the ‘USB power mode’ does not work at all. I’ve followed the instructions (see attached image) but whenever I connect the Hip-DAC to a device first then power on it always uses the battery. I have tried on iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook, Android and PC.

Has this feature been removed or is it being enabled on a future firmware? The fact that both units I’ve had cannot go into USB power mode suggests it’s not a fault.

Thanks

@iFi audio How the Hip-Dac compares to Micro iDSD Black???
While I haven't heard Hip-Dac yet, I guess this maybe a bit similar situation to Zen line which is different since different team has been working on it in turn making a reflection in final sound.

Secondly this is a different price range than iDSD BL. I am the last one to tell you that price is the only and real SQ factor but since both devices came from the same company I would assume both should sound differently.

On the other hand I think comparing those two is a bit pointless since they were designed for different purposes and iDSD micro is called transportable white Hip-Dac is definitively more on portable side. iDSD has also a lot more settings than Hip-Dac that can influence sound reception, including turbo mode for headphones. Still I am both very curious what @iFi audio has to say and to hear Hip-Dac in real life to judged myself. Looking forward to it.

In genreal, our products' performance scales with price. Plus, iDSD BL is totally different than hip-dac and each has a lot to offer given their price!

@iFi audio Is there any chance of a reply to my post?

I cannot create a support ticked on your website as the Hip-Dac is not listed there yet.

Thanks

Just spent the past hour playing around with our office unit. Very impressive considering the price. Sexy little thing and feels good in the hand, too.

But remember to turn Power Match OFF when using IEMs!
