@iFi audio or anyone else, see if you can reproduce this. Don’t wear the cans when starting playback though... if it’s remembering the last setting, have the last setting at a low volume (which I had!)

    Again, this happened when I:

    1. turned down the volume till the knob colour turned off (won’t do this again).

    2. left it overnight (7 hours)

    3. started playing music before turning the volume up (knob colour still off)

    4. music blares from left channel (knob colour stays off).

    See if you can reproduce.

And let’s not forget my other observation... turning the volume knob down caused the actual volume to jump UP.

I didn’t see @iFi audio give any explanation for that either.. :frowning2:

    TL;DR: No.

    Long Version:

The device you show uses digital domain volume control, likely directly implement in the USB/BT subsystems using HID for volume setting. We have this integrated, in our XMOS USB firmware as well as for the BT system, 'baked in' fundamentally and hard to remove by the chip vendor.

However it is DELIBERATLY DISABLED by us (non-trivial) as we do not feel that the use of a digital domain volume control is advisable for good sound quality.

We have been investigating to link the controls for these built in digital volume controls with our UI. However, the level of integration in the chipsets and the limitations of the BT and USB volume control systems make full feedback (that is all volume controls are transparently linked) non-trivial.

Other manufacturers' products that attempted this faced many problems with conflicting volume control settings, going as far as putting device volume controls to 100% when plugging into a PC/Mac.

So for the time being we have decided against implementing this, until we find a better solution than those defined by USB/BT standards and chip makers.

Of course you can have your opinion, you can disagree and we understand that some people simply don't trust us etc. Still, we're not going to show our kitchen table here and explain what tools we use and how. The secret sauce can't be spilled. If you want to stick to the obvious parts in datasheets, that's perfectly fine. But we're after the well-hidden stuff, things very much not obvious.

They already should be as their launch is TODAY! Our official site will be updated shortly.

Hi iFi, just so everyone understands , apart from wasting energy (a good reason of course) what is wrong with leaving xDSD in desktop mode?

I didn't understand the comment about stress on the battery - I thought this is what desktop mode is for? To stress the battery less?

So many xDSD users here... Cause my question stays without answer i suppose the battery lasts forever...

I didn't time it but roughly 6 hours (so could have been 7 or 8 hours)? That was from a USB3.0 port.

I've seen iFi say it can charge quicker with a 1.5A charger but I haven't tried.

IFI's customer support is excellent. I had an issue on my xDSD and opened a support ticket. Then I exchanged several messages with a support staff and the issue was solved finally. We do not necessary to yell here.

I use my Apple iPad charging brick into the wall and it is 2.1 amps and 12 watts and it seems to charge from red(low battery) to full in under 4 hours but I haven’t timed it directly.

If you use your laptop or computer USB port those are usually 0.5 amps and will charge much slower.
If you use a standard iPhone brick(small size) those are usually 5v 1.0 amps.

I am curious about others experience with battery life..
It advertises up to 10 hours but on the manual that is in line out mode
8 hours Bluetooth and only 6 hours in USB mode (which is a bummer because 5 hours is what I get and that doesn’t get me through the day)
I have only been using usb mode because the Bluetooth is broken where every time u connect you have to go to settings and ‘forget device’ then pair it as a new unit all over again.
I don’t believe they have a fix for it as I have been going back and forth with their customer service via email for almost 2 weeks and it hasn’t been solved yet but they’re trying.

Other than that I LOVE the sound on this unit! It is very clear and transparent and I love the amount of precise volume steps you can use to get the perfect volume! I have used this with everything from my Lyra II and Cascades(32 ohm) to even trying my 300 ohm hd 650s and it powers them plenty loud but I still prefer 650’s with my desktop amp but for a portable unit it is very impressive upgrade from Q1 mark II(8.5-9 hour battery life)

I suppose no one is experiencing battery drain too?

Speaking of remembering the last setting (e.g. volume), does the xDSD remembers the xBass+/3D+ settings? My unit seems to exhibit a random behaviour. Sometimes it turns on with xBass+, sometimes with 3D+ (but most of the time it would turn on with xBass+). If I toggle it to my preferred setting (3D+ only) and turn it off. It would turn on with the correct setting still on 3D+. But after a long period in off state (say >1 day), it would go back to its random behaviour again.

Mine does this random xBass and 3D on startup as well.

I have been super quick with this review as I have just realized there is only 7 days I have got with the xDSD. Luckily this weekend I was able to spend a lot of time with this DAC/amp, on weekdays it is usually not that easy.
