Well the sound is like I've never heard before. (Utopia)

And the options for various sound signatures are endless, plus they are all great.

This thing is pure magic, people.

Damn you iFi, now I have to get another one for the desktop.

Question for those using the Pro iCan and Pro iDSD stack.

Assume the following settings:

- 0dB gain on both
- HiFi Fixed RCA output on Pro iDSD
- unbalanced RCA interconnects and
- single ended 6.3mm HP output.

If I can listen to a song at 12 oclock knob position with Pro iDSD alone, when I add Pro iCAN should 12 o’clock knob position on iCan be the same volume? Same source and song obviously.
In short, no.

In 0dB the Pro iDSD will output 1.13V (Balanced) or 0.56V (Single-ended) with the volume maxed out ON THE HEADPHONE JACK (not line out).

The line out is industry standard, namely 4.6V/2.3V for Balanced/SE modes respectively in Hifi mode.

With the Pro iCAN, in 0dB mode this will be the headphone output with the volume maxed out.

Please use 3.5mm outputs on the Pro iCAN (iEMatch integrated) for overly sensitive headphones.

Thanks, this is the one thing I didn’t try during demo. Will give it a try.

Formidable combo: iDSD + Bayerdynamic Xelento

Source: TIDAL master

The Xelento allows to listen on "head enveloping" volume levels for long time without ear fatigue. Can't say that about e.g. Utopia, or any speaker system for that matter. Fantastic balance, dynamics and resolution and they are so tiny that you could rest your head on a side on a pillow without even squashing the sound stage.

Yes TA and also the Apodizing. +DSD1k upsample sometimes to smoothen things up if needed and still retain detail/control (unlike the tube modes). The tube modes don't do it for me -- so far, spent very little time with it, also maybe I'm spoiled by my Lyr 2 where I've collected some of the best tubes available.

Just compared to Hugo 2 on the Xelentos and Hugo has a very liquid presentation but the dynamics of iDSD are unmatched. Hugo is impressive for how small it is. I guess I'll be rotating them. Good times.

Dynamics is what really separates the idsd from the rest of the pack.

Ifi Audio is an innovative and avant-garde brand, but I do not understand why I named TA filters, and copied the initials of a famous brand mark T + A, ....... or they have forgotten the symbol + between T and A, ........ may be a coincidence, .......

It's just Transient Aligned. I don't think anyone should be getting confused with T+A.

They also have a GTO filter but I don't think anyone assumes it means Gran Turismo Omologato

Funnily enough, that's my preferred filter.

Great DAC/Amp.

Let's refresh what has been said about filters in this thread already:

Filters

We provide the option to operate without any filter and also to upsample to DSD without applying any digital filter. This bitperfect mode is in effect the same as the non-oversampling mode. It causes slight very high FR roll-off and the BP+ mode corrects this via an analogue filter.

We also offer a choice of digital filters for PCM (and within some limits DSD) playback, namely:
  • Gibbs Transient Optimised aka. the GTO - it minimises the Gibbs phenomenon causing time-domain distortion, more about this one we'll reveal shortly.
  • Apodising - this one is said to correct some problems in digital recordings and has many fans
  • Transient Aligned - this one a very large number of taps
As upconversion to DSD uses first oversampling to 705.4/768kHz, all filter options apply unchanged to DSD upsampling.

The main exception is is with DSD inputs. DSD is processed either as bitperfect signal only (no filter choice) or upsampled to DSD512/1024. In the latter case there is no 'bitperfect' filter option (upsampled DSD must use a digital filter).

Our default recommendation for filter is now our new GTO, which we feel offers the best balance between the various requirements of suppressing unwanted ultrasonic noise AND minimising transient distortion (hence transient optimised). A full tech document we'll publish in due time.
@iFi audio was that tech doc published yet? ^
