iFi Audio Micro iDAC2
Feb 16, 2017 at 2:26 AM Post #46 of 92
I use the iDAC2 only as a DAC for my HP amp plugged like:

PC -> generic USB cable (taken from ASUS Xonar U7 usb sound card which I use at work) -> iPurifier -> iDAC2 -> stock RCA cable (from iDAC2) -> Littledot MK2 -> Beyers T1.2.

Since I need a longer cable I plan to buy a better one. I took a look at QED Reference and QED Performance. We will see if these make an improvement.

At the moment I do not plan to add other iFi stuff like the power source or Gemini to my setup... too expensive and useless for me, since my other 2 DACs have their own powersource and cables.

OK, I added as USB cable to the iDAC a QED Reference USB A-B of 2m length. I needed a longer cable and decided to buy a quality one to keep it for some years to my "primary" DAC used for T1.2. And yes, cables DO make a difference in sound quality. I know about all the debates and "science" part and I will not start it. I just say that there is an improvement, on higher frequencies, when using iDAC2 + iPurifier and QED Reference cable connected to the PC compared to a "generic China" USB cable I previously used.
The same experience I had when upgrading HD600 with Furutech cables. What I do not know is why sometimes the sound is more clear but somehow "neutral", "metalic" and somehow muffled. Is this a known effect on these triple shielded cables?
Maybe I am crazy, hell knows... I will continue to listen to it today to form a definitive opinion.

Are you expecting iFi Audio to have inside information about Linux developments that the many thousands of other contributors here know nothing about?

I haven't found anything online that mentions this (hence my question to iFi). Only the iDSD is mentioned on the Github page of Linux patches.

Official iFi documentation mentions DoP only for DSD256.

Let's let @iFi audio clarify.
On Linux maybe. Native DSD256 works just fine on Windows.

Hi @iFi audio

Is native DSD256 support coming to Linux, for the iDAC2?

Is it being worked on?

Cheers in advance

Our source devices are USB Audio Class 2.0 compliant and capable of DSD256. But the question you asked should be directed not to us but your OS provider instead.

Thanks gents. I had the (wrong) understanding that you were perhaps involved in the process. I didn't realise you have nothing to do with the process. Understood now

Thanks for clarifying

I am using the Lenovo T460 laptop (6th gen. Intel i5) with 12G of RAM
I am using the iOne/v2.26 driver and JRive V22.

1xDSD DoP is smooth as silk
1xDSD Native I can feel it is not as smooth. SQ I can't really tell a different from DoP. Using <10% CPU & 154M memory
2xDSD Native I can hear click/pop, drops out
4xDSD Native it is horrible

May I know what is the reason?
I dont think it is because the CPU is not powerful enough.
