Even today we have an option for 120GB (Samsung) 1.8 HDD - which is HUGE. I would not be surprised that figure will be somewhere near 200GB in a year or two.
80GB iMod gives room for over 2100 ALAC files, so you do the math.
Right now, for me iMod already took the responsibility of being a worthy substitute to CDPs - and YES I have listened to some reputed CDPs (including Marantz) and IMHO it's not worth it to be confined to a stationary big CDP when they can't auhtoratively claim supremacy over iMod 5G.

haha, have fun
Oh my bad. By Cd player in my initial post, I mean the portable ones. I don't plan on ever buying a bulky ass home CD player in my life so comparing them would be virtually impossible in my case. Teehee.

Well the portable cd player is still going to sound better esp if it gets some mods done like Filburt's badass portables which apparenty can at least semi compete with 5k Esoteric home models.
But the convenience of not having to carry around cds would be nice. Still more than unlimited hd capacity I'd like to see unlimited battery life. That to me is the real killer on an imod. How can someone consider something with 5-8 hrs of battery life to be really portable? That isn't even a decent train/plane ride...

OK, so lets say 18 hr life with 10k wav file song capacity(no video).
How can we cut out some power drain? Perhaps make the lcd smaller to just read a single line. Keep the backlight but make a manual button instead of a timer. Take off games, calenders, etc. Keep the options for songs, albums, artist, genre and the capability to make playlists on the fly. Maybe be able make your own eq settings instead of presets. And a 1/4" adapter.
I own a 4G 40 gb iMod and I do feel the lack of HD space. Means I have access to a lot of great music but also means I often remember the last time I heard something to the day, and I find it a PITA to constantly update the iMod with the latest and greatest disc I've bought.
That said, though I love the iMod as a DAP, it doesn't really challenge my Saturn in the SQ stakes -- which is fine, it's a whole lot cheaper and has the form factor, etc, etc. But I would miss the enhanced SQ of a good CDP and also I think the pleasure of the media itself. I LIKE the ritual of choosing and playing a physical disk. It feels a little more authentic to me, and more public, less isolating then flipping through a tiny menu a few inches from my nose.
Anyway, it's a good question. I wonder how many here and on other audio sites have ditched their media for HD-based systems and then come back? Any? None? Will CDPs ever have the "retro" value of vinyl?
To me, I enjoy slapping in the disc and watch the CD revolve. That's the lively aspect of music listening, compared to a couple hundred CDs one button away.
If the iMod also had a good digital output, maybe then mainstream CD players would be close to obsolete, but we probably won't see that happening.

That is so true, and exactly the reason why I held onto my portable. I use a dap most of the time anyway, but occasionally it's nice to choose a CD off the shelf. It's more involving somehow and makes a nice change
