If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

Very informative reply, thank you. I'll pull the trigger with the ER4S and down the road pick up a portable amp.

No problem.  I listen to pretty much every type of music, so I've put the fuze through its paces. :)

On another note, if anyone finds it useful... I've uploaded a video tutorial on changing your er4 filters.  Perhaps it's obvious, but I figured I'd make one anyway.

Very nice video! But did you say Etymotic sell both the green and red plastic filters on their website?

Is it true that you can't get any Etymotic cables unless it's one of those specialised and expensive cables?

I'm thinking of getting one of those adapters on eBay so you can use a Westone cable instead.

It may not be ideal, but what about something like this? http://sewelldirect.com/35-mm-Audio-Extension-Cable-3-inch.asp?gclid=COOo45TM9rkCFYWe4AodMVcAdA

As for the ety plug, I actually prefer it over any other. Call me crazy, but I don't like straight plugs anymore, and before the er4s I thought they were dumb for using an L shaped plug. The er4s may be larger, but it really feels like a rock and with everything I have, it feels like it has less stress on the jacks and is less likely to get snagged. I find it easier to pocket carry a player with it as well as simply hold a player with it.

I do realize it is probably worse for fitting cases, but I never use cases on any of my devices. I slide them into sleeves i make. 6 year old ipod has zero scratches. Not even a mark. And I never drop my players. If you want protection though and need headphones I could see the jack being a bit large... Perhaps the cable above? Or you could buy a different cable for the er4s...

Thanks!  The extension cable would be fine for now.

OK.  So in order to get the newer cable, which I gather pretty much everyone finds to be superior, I need to order from Ety directly and specifically ask for the "newer" cable which is braided from the Y down to the 1/8" stereo plug?  Is that right?  And I just call the 1-888-389-6684 number?

Yes. They gave me a new cable when I asked for one. Keep us posted!

So, one more question: the red and blue color coded version of the ER-4S is the one with the older cable, right?  So specifically asking for the newer cable will get me the ER-4S with both earpieces gray?  (I kind of like the red and blue.  :frowning2:  )
