If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

finally chose the EVO as my daily driver and also production and drumming set. They do everything so utterly well. And yes I would choose their bass over my 2XR anyday as well
Interesting, i tried the EVO and it did have more/deeper and clearer bass but i ended up returning them as i found the cable kept getting tangled and the weight of the drivers was off-putting. They are technically better than the ex3/2 series but not necessarily more enjoyable to listen to, the ex3 (for example) sounds softer (and less detailed, less space/air) but are very listenable for long periods and (to me) far more confortable.

That’s the thing I think at this level of nuance it really os down to those small niggly bits that make the difference. For instance different filters and tips make a pretty dramatic difference to the whole ety experience. Since Ety tune everything more or less to the diffuse field signature it’s basically just a matter of affordability, comfort and then a little fine tuning with accessories :)
I love all my ety stuff gotta say. Funny enough I think what made the EVO such a good choice was that it didn’t begin to fall apart when I had my bass guitarist, rhythm guitarist playing along to my drums. Jamming with the 4XR was really fun but got a bit muddy when things got complicated/layered. 4SR did a bit better but EVO doesn’t seem to break a sweat.

I’d be interested to know actually if anybody knows why this is. Do the separate bass drivers allow for the mid/treble driver to do it’s specialised thing? Could that explain why they don’t get as wobbly when I’m jamming?

I agree, i found the red filters to give my preferred sound on the ex3/2 xr models together with shure yellow foam tips but then what works for me (love mellow vinyl sound and want to make portable digital sound as good)) may not do so for everyone.

Also the only iems that fit my ears properly and give good seal & bass are the etymotic long stemmed, deep insertion.

Made up a couple of 4 core 3.5mm cables out of spare stuff.
1x copper 1x sp copper, yours for the cost of postage to wherever that may be.

I use the tubular Comply tips with the wax guard. I have the EVO tuned with brown filters and so the wax guard helps with levelling down the slight harshness in treble and the foams help to dampen around 7-10 kHz. They sound great and super comfy :)
for me, noise isolation is more important... from my experience, the black foams block sound better than the comply tips, in fact the black foams are the most noise isolating tips i've worn, other than some really tight silicon/foam combinations i've tried

Here are some measurements with er3se, er4sr, and er3xr. I've been surprised with the results.

ER3SE
impedance does not change the FR linearly. treble increases up to about +30ohms and then decreases, and stabilizes. 75,150,200 ohms all have the same FR.

er3se THD.JPG

ER4SR
Impedance does not change FR much. THD measures pretty much the same as a ER3SE.

ER4SR THD.JPG

ER4SR over ER3SE over ER3SE+23ohms:

ER3XR
Pretty much behaves the same as the ER3SE (unlike what I thought), but with added bass. But THD is a lot higher and is similar to speakerphone's measurement with ER4XR. On all models, THD increases very quickly with volume, so I recommend keeping it low.

Weird how all 3rd party THD tests on the ER3XR/ER4XR all get conflicting data. The ER3XR has 0.9% bass THD but every other test wither the ER4XR/ER3XR show <0.3% at 95db. Speakerphone didn't even show what the Etymotic data sheet untill someone in the comments ask him, That odd Etymotic says the ER4XR was 0.7% at 104db on both units. But the blogger says 1.3% at 800Hz with a 94db SPL.

i thought the ER3 uses the same drivers as ER4 , just without the same standard of channel matching?

I also use red filters on my 2XR and use ety foams but the slimmer ety foams you have to buy separately. They're incredible! Very deep insertion is possible if that floats year boat 😁

Hey all. I've got the 2se for a week now and I think we are a perfect match. Anyone using a BTR5 so we can compare listening levels? I use the large clear triple flange tips and they go deep. And does this app estimate seem true to you? I put 1015Ω at the top field cause I read there is a 1000Ω green dumper in the nozzle but maybe I shouldn't and it's irrelevant?

That why I'm confused at the ER3XR THD have near 1% from 20Hz to 1KHz. A lot of people seem to be using ER3/ER4PT as weak excuse to claim the Single BA Ety's are easy to distort because Etymotic doesn't show the FR/THD data like on the ER4XR.

The same blog he quoted the owner claimed the ER4XR was 1.3% THD wise but then showed a Ety chart showing It being <0.65% at 1KHz. Tyll did this too claiming the ER4XR would distort in the bass but then the THD data showed <0.4% from 20 ~ 400Hz.

On ASR I even had folk claim I was lying about having a ER4SR at 0.3% at 1KHz even when I posted a photo of my sheet from my phone as proof. With one user showing me a ER4SR with 1% at 20Hz while getting nasty when told that was a artifact from the software or rig?.

When was the ER-4P/S/B released, 2003? The ones with detachable cable.

I think ER-S and ER-B were released in 1991 and ER-4P in 1993, I might be wrong though.
Did the ER-4B have detachable cable? I was just wondering if ER-4 had the 2-pin detachable cable at the time of release in 1991, or did it get the design at a later revision. I know that ER-1/2/3/6 didn't have detachable cables at the time of release.
