If you could pick 3 headphones below $1000 each to form a well-rounded trio, which headphones would you pick?

Trust me, higher priced headphones does not automatically makes them better. There is plenty people prefer the cheaper ones over the $1000USD ones right now.

me being one of them, i do plan on buying a more expensive pair soon, but im perfectly happy with my ~$300 headphones.

i would choose RS1, LCD-2, and K701 to answer this question however.

For me, nearly all of the "top tier" having big flaws that I can't agree with.

Ed10 sounds off with most music.
HD800 just hurts my ears with its treble.
LCD2 is too closed sounding, lacks the airy feel.
D7000 is not a top tier.

Only higher priced phone I will consider is the SR-009. That really sounds exception, the details are just breathtaking and it is not picky with the source file like others killing you when fed with sub-par files. Shame about the price.

I would get the ATH A2000x (closed) or the AKG K701 (open)

And the antithesis to that sound signature..   a nice meaty Ultrasone Pro 2900 (which I find amazing)

And round them off with a portable like the Beyer DT1350 or ATH ESW10jpn
