Why are they being discontinued?

so many good headphones are discontinued

it's probably some conspiracy by owners to increase the prices on used units

(I'm looking at you, K1K owners!!!)

why does any company stop making a good product? probably because theyre making a new one that they think is better

The only better option it seems is the D2000, which sells for a little over 3 times the price of the d1001. It doesn't make sense that they would cut out an introductory level audiophile headphone without replacing it with a better model simultaneously. People willing to spend $100 or less on headphones wont simply decide to spend $250 on the d2000s so they would be losing out on a market niche.

Maybe they want to reposition their headphone brand and market themselves as more of a high-end only company?
You don't see ferrari selling $10k cars new

Their are distinct benefits in not selling cheap products.

Too many people buy Creative Aurvana Live! - the same headphones but cheaper. Second, people found that replacing the cable in these makes them much better, to the level my friend sold his MD5000's.

Truth. Especially if they think that they can get a fair percentage of would-be 1001 buyers to give up the extra $150. i imagine that is what they're betting on.

Why would this cause them to discontinue, though? Especially without releasing a new (and improved) entry level can? Say, a D1001s with better cables.

Silencewithin's comment makes sense. But OTOH, If I was in the market for a budget headphone (how much are the D1001?) I wouldn't raise my budget that much to get the D2000 instead.

I'm guessing Denon is releasing a new model to replace the D1001.
If Denon annonces the new model people will stop buying the old model (D1001), so Denon drops the price on the D1001 to clear out the stock of the D1001 first.
